A Greensboro correspondent reports that in North Carolina there is no Democrat who opposed Union, emancipation, or enfranchisement and who did not join the Grant coalition. The piece notes virtually all black and white Unionists supported Grant during the Ku Klux period and the war years.
Greeley’s letter lauds the Democratic plant by nearly unanimous vote while praising the party’s chosen principles as both Republican and Democratic. A severe storm in Van Wert Ohio July 27 wrecked buildings and fences, destroying homes and killing J. L. Ys wife and son. A Niagara Falls drift incident reports a boat with Liscar’s two children, Barney the fisherman, and an unknown man going over the falls. Boston notes fire at City Flour Mills July 26, with extensive stock losses of 380000 insured.

Matamonas July 26 reports flags at half mast and offices closed as mourning. At five o'clock civil and military authorities joined a large crowd in the plaza for an oration honoring the late President Juarez. Messages from Camargo Monterey Saltillo and other cities show similar observances across the republic.
A Washington dispatch reports that additional Confederate manuscripts will be released publically, including letters from Holcomb of Virginia and Clay, associate of Saunders, connected to transactions noted by Thompson. No further purchases will be made by the Treasury Department.

Wheat firmer amid fair demand. corn meal steady. Groceries firm with coffee at 15 1/2 and rice steady. Provisions steady to firm with pork at 13 9 and lard higher.
