Strike Tying Up Building In Chi Not Authorized

CHICAGO July 19 Although contractors and union carpenters showed no disposition to compromise Friday night after virtually all building operations, estimated at $50,000,000 or more in value, had stopped with approximately 100,000 workers idle, the building trades council head Simon O'Donnell announced Friday that his organization never had authorized the strike of carpenters and others. He said the council would begin consideration of the situation. The Building Construction Employers' association stopped all work this morning after the striking carpenters, 16,000 in number, had failed to respond to an ultimatum to return at 8 a m. In addition to the 100,000 workmen made idle, probably 50,000 others, employed by supply companies, are expected to be affected by tomorrow. The carpenters have held out for $1 an hour, although their contract with two years to run called for 80c. The employers offer of 92 12 cents was rejected. The ultimatum followed. Strikes of hod carriers and other building laborers preceded the action of the carpenters and most of the difficulties.

Embargo Placed on Coastwise Shipping

New York July 19 A freight embargo on coastwise traffic was announced by coastwise steamship companies under federal control due to seamen and engineer strikes along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The embargo, forwarded to shipping boards by the United States Railroad Administration, follows rapid freight piling and partial port closures as strikers desert for harvest work. Union leaders warned the entire nation’s shipping could halt within two weeks if protests continue. Police tightened vigilance after an attack on a Bowery employment office tied to strikebreakers.
