Train wreck and Oswego fire threaten city blocks
On July 7 a Baltimore Hallroad train was thrown from the track by a beam placed on the rails near Washington, with three men on the platform. one killed, two injured. A concurrent Oswego blaze destroyed mills and elevators, burning over 300,000 bushels of grain as well as 200 stores and dwellings. The fire’s extent left Randall's elevator and a church saved, while Germany? locals reported massive losses and widespread insurance impact.
