A June 30 1855 editorial critique denounces Southern agitation and a platform to enslave, urging peace and redress. The Cairo Times notes wheat shipped yesterday from Wetang in Pulaski County, 24 miles from Carico, destined for Chicago then New York by express. The St Joseph's Valley Register reports a Monday flood in the St Joseph River area near South Bend Indiana. Water rose two feet above a high mark as head gates failed and the race waters swept away the dye house oil mill and other works. The river cut through the race, bridges washed away cutting off Lewell and northeastern county. No lives lost though one near drowning occurred. Damages to mills and apparatus run into thousands of dollars. Mishawaka dam and race remained intact.
In London a vast iron steamship is described with an estimated length of 680 feet and a 25,000 ton burden. Projectors claim it could sail Liverpool to New York in two weeks and to Australia in thirty two days, carrying 4000 passengers and possibly 10000 soldiers. The vessel would be iron built, fire and watertight divided into many compartments, with noncombustible wood and a wide deck. Early trials planned between Livorno and New York.
London Times reports laying submarine telegraph to Eupatoria, completing the line up to Omar Pasha. Turks and Tartars puzzled by the buried line, imagining various warlike devices, while learning it links to Sebastopol and Varna in minutes. The vessel returned with more Tartars to Sebastopol.
A 99 year old prompt preacher, born Oct 9 1755, arrives in Hebron Conn invited by Ex-Governor Peters aged 82. He preached all day, baptized four children, and declared he could speak for 45 minutes if needed. Abbott Lawrence of Boston, age 80, is gravely ill.
Correspondence reports an overseer Mr Walters murdered near Alexandria by enslaved people from Mrs Flint's plantation. He was found in the river after being bound and weighted. Six alleged murders noted in months plus a major Nashville bridge collapse with six known dead. Also moral anecdotes and a cautionary tale about invitations.
The visit of Queen Victoria is announced for the Fete Napoleonienna on August 15. She will stay at the chateau of St Cloud to rest under shaded avenues. The Empregg plans to present a diamond girdle of rare taste. Also due to visit are Arch Duke of Austria, King of Wurtemberg, and King of Sardinia as guests of the Emperor who delays Eastward travel. The young King of Portugal and his brother arrived May 26 and visited the Tuileries and the Exhibition.
A man, believed Canadian bound with vegetables, fell from a skiff just above the Rapids and was swept away by the current at Niagara Falls. The report notes his name is unknown and mentions a separate advance on gas cooking by Mr. E D Willard at the National Hotel.
From New Orleans Delta June 19 reports Bayou Sara burned nearly to ground on Friday night at ten o clock. Loss estimated around 500000 with many stores and houses destroyed. Fire started in a stable behind J Meyer establishment and swept toward Marketstreet, destroying Harper Son and other firms, Ledger office, Smiths Hotel, and numerous buildings.
A letter from Glenceo Mississippi dated 16th warns cholera has appeared on some plantations in the neighborhood and fear to leave home. General Polk in Chicot county Arkansas has lost twenty three slaves in three days. A physician attending the sick notes more new cases but believes they will improve. Neighbor Wilkessen has lost seven slaves to cholera.
A dramatic reminiscence recalls a man driven by delirium tremens to leap from a hotel window, watched by fashionable protectors who failed to hold him. The narrator laments failed parental guidance, reflecting on a mother’s past influence and a family ruined by drink, amid other brief notes on local incidents and a Swedish wind-measuring instrument.
City Council of Quincy met by call of the Mayor. Patrick Shanahor bid 14 cents per cubic yard for excavation and 5 cents per linear foot for paving for Tilson's alley, awarded. Sidewalk grades required on Ohio street and Sixth street within 30 to 60 days. Fifth street declared open to 66 feet width. Mayor authorized to fire a national salute at sunrise noon and sunset on the Fourth and for public buildings to close in celebration of Independence Day. City Clerk A W Blakesley signed the record.
In 1855 a public broadside defends states rights over national slavery policy, condemns expansion of slavery into new territories, and vows loyalty to constitutional limits. It denounces demagogues, urges plain speech, and warns that binding others to spread slavery damages liberty. Also notes quarterly report from the North Ward female school and local plant nursery references.
A skiff sent by W. EF. Vandoorn & Co. to secure a log set sank after a storm opposite Warsaw. Jesse Townsend and Saml. Bowers, of Quinzy, drowned, leaving widows and children. The deceased were respected, and the community extends sympathy. Earthquake tremor felt in Baltimore. No further details.
