Captain John Hull, Massachusetts mint master, oversaw a coinage crisis era using silver bullion from Spanish sources and stolen haul from buccaneers. The 1652 pine tree shillings bore a pine tree on the reverse and a date on the obverse. Hull kept one in twenty for himself, swelling his wealth as magistrates watched.

Man on the Housatonic track aims for a road not rail
Pittsfield Sun records a drunken farmer's peril on the Housatonic railroad near Falls Village. A horse and buggy survived a collision with a freight train, while cattle guards and wreckage littered the track. The man and two young sons were found unharmed, his coat torn and hat dented.
