Chicago Borrows From '21 Fund to Pay Her Teachers
Chicago will raise salaries for about 9000 school teachers by roughly 400 dollars a year retroactive to January 1. The Board of Education will borrow about 8.5 million dollars to cover the increase, using 1.25 million on hand and anticipated 1920 tax revenue. The move follows unanimous City Council support and civic-group backing, despite a 7.8 million dollar accumulated deficit since 1914.
