The Rev Albert Barnes longtime First Presbyterian pastor Philadelphia died suddenly in Philadelphia on Saturday while visiting a friend with his daughter. Born 1798 in Rome New York he studied at Fairfield Academy Hamilton College Princeton Seminary and led congregations in Connecticut Massachusetts New Jersey before a long tenure at Washington Square Philadelphia. He authored numerous religious works including extensive New Testament commentaries and notes popular in Sunday schools. He declined a Doctor of Divinity degree years earlier.
On December 1, 1970, Fisher and CH Miller chased a herd of buffalo in southern Nebraska. Fisher’s gun misfired after a last shot. A German woman named Bertha Weiss, twenty four, who fought in the Krom Prinz under a private’s uniform, recovered the Sixteenth Prussian Regiment colors at Gravelotte after wounds exposed her sex. Posing as Bernhard von Weiss, she had already earned the Iron Cross and passed an ensign’s exam with connivance from a captain. She served in several battles including Specheren Heights and was decorated before joining the Crown Prince's regiment. She is said to be brave, modest, and firm.
A Honolulu Advertiser note reports a whale captured in Arctic seas carried a harpoon from a ship cruising in the Northern Seas. The whale apparently crossed the Pole via open water, proving Polar Sea navigable for whales and suggesting ships might navigate high latitudes with proper knowledge.
