Reports cover W H Edgar taking charge of the Jerseyville 2 register, a C B & Q R R branch survey from Yates City to Buda crossing near Princeville, a silver plate theft traced to Wm Dolan in St Louis, plans for a new Monmouth depot, Peoria Transcript sale to Peoria Transcript Company, a 118th Illinois soldiers reunion in Fountain Green, a Peoria ice accident, Chicago and Alton drilling an artesian well at Odell, Mc Donough county court house bids rejected, and Chicago grain trade growth with multi million bushel figures and livestock receipts.
San Francisco port statistics for 1868 show 500 vessels sailed to Atlantic and foreign sources with cargoes totaling twenty three hundred thousand dollars. Exports of wheat since July reach 150000 tons and 240000 barrels of flour. Coin and bullion exports for the year amount to 36400000 dollars.

Washington Jan 3 Hon D A Wells Specie Commissioner of Revenue has nearly completed his third annual report to the Secretary of the Treasury. The document covers tariff internal revenue money and industrial questions and urges changes to remove taxation obstacles while protecting home industry. It also recommends modifications in the bonded warehouse system. District Attorney Carrington has summoned about ten witnesses for the Grand Jury none from afar to pursue a second indictment against John H Surratt. Court House preparations for the second trial are said to have cost the Government about 150000.
Paris reports Burlingame and the Chinese Embassy arrived. Malaga insurgents fired on the American steamer Swatara, killing and wounding and later troops recaptured three barricades. Provisional Government may aim to place Montpensier on the throne. Serrano and Roda support, Prim opposes. Riotous disturbances flare in Florence over the will tax. The Maine reaches Southampton.
