Addressing our Teachers to-day for the first time under the date of 1869 we extend a cordial Happy New Year to readers and pledge fidelity to the right. A Cuban annexation to Mexico is rumored. Reports from St Louis mention Sheridan’s victory over Indians.
From Georgia news of December 30 describes a mob attack on Hayward's plantation on the Ogeechee river with the sheriff and 17 prisoners seized. Armed rioters freed captives, looted warrants, and threatened white residents as a warlike mood spreads. A large posse is planned at daybreak to rescue women and children. Chicago dispatch notes Arkansas unrest linked to Governor Clayton's actions, with Gr ant staff expected to clarify the situation.
Fires in Lacon Illinois destroyed a dry goods and two grocery stores and a showroom. A second fire damaged a hotel drug store and a dwelling. In New York City Briggs Bros livery stable with 150 horses and 20 carriages burned, losses around 290000, mostly insured.

New York December 31 At a meeting of artists last evening a resolution was adopted to unite painters sculptors and all with an interest in the different branches of fine arts to consider the proper steps to be taken by them to secure cohesive action and collaboration.

Charles M. Rogers once head of the St. Nicholas Hotel was killed on 12th Street near Broadway in daylight. Mor ton and Thompson, the Express robbers, were turned over to U S authorities in Windsor, Canada this evening.
Money during the greater part of the stay was gentler than yesterday but as the market opened just before and after the session it grew tight. Rates advanced from simple interest to 4 percent. Money was offered at these levels when the market opened. Gold showed firmness with prices opening around 124 541 3474.
