Geo Butler, president of the Tennessee National Bank, was arrested in Memphis on a Nashville warrant for alleged defalcation of school funds and released on $5,000 bail. The case recalls wartime losses that led to a comptroller’s suicide. Three hundred colored militia occupied Hapefida near the city, with troops sent to Marion and Mound City as pillaging began in the towns.
Richmond Dec 29. R T Daniel city attorney was today relieved by military authorities and L H Chandler appointed in his place. This marks the first action under application of the 14th amendment.

Berlin reports state the Paris Conference discussions would cover Crete autonomy, suspension of Sultan’s ultimatum measures, and support for Turkey’s just demands. Constantinople notes Porte’s opposition to holding a Conference. New York prints Bismarck’s view on Roumania, Austria, Russia, and South German States, stressing peace, treaties, and eventual confederation.
Gen Hazen reports 3000 allied tribes around Fort Cobb comprising Apaches Caddoes and Wathetans while 100 hostiles stay near Red River. Kiowas split with half friendly. Comanches largely friendly. Santanta and Bull Bear labeled dangerous. Sheridan orders their capture or death, or imprisonment at Fort Gibson.
A morning fire at 49 Franklin Street struck the upper floors used as lodging rooms. Two young men on the fourth floor leapt to the ground in panic, dying from their injuries. The lower floor housed a shoe shop operated by Kaltmeyzer and Schaman, extinguished without further incident.

Washington reports a festive juvenile gathering at the Executive Mansion with three to four hundred children. Senator Morton of Indiana replies to Mr. Greeley’s letter, arguing that bond payments in gold cannot occur while currency remains depreciated and the return to specie payments must come first. The steamer Jewels carrying 850 bales of cotton sank in the Alabama river three miles above Mobile. Most of the cargo was saved and no lives were lost. The St Nicholas struck the dam at the falls placed there by Gen Bank's army.
