Palmer Coal Strike Tales Continue With Testimony
In Indianapolis hearings miners and operators clash as Attorney General Garfield proposes wage terms. Ogle recounts a December 5 meeting where officials discussed a higher wage increase than 14 percent to avert injunctions and possible jail for strikers while stressing the administration’s temporary fuel policy.
Law, Order Over Wages Sparks Coal Debate
Senator Frelinghuysen pressed about miners' pay as Ogle testified that wage and coal price issues are now a legal matter. He said a settlement granting higher wages would betray principles and that the government’s proposal had not been accepted or fully reviewed. Ogle noted changes to Garfield’s plan and said no commission could quickly resolve soft coal wage questions. The committee adjourned without a date for more hearings.
