British and French forces advance across Picardy and along the Somme as they capture Noyon and reach the Aisne and Oise corridors. Washington August 30 national prohibition moved forward in congress as the senate adopted the Sheppard substitute amending the $11 million emergency agricultural appropriation bill. The date for enforcement is set after June 30 1919 until war end and demobilization. The measure awaits house action and carries no record vote.
Harold Abbott, an inmate at the Iniaes site reformatory in Pontiac, NL, was killed when he and four companions assaulted guard Jas Quinn, seized his keys, and fled toward railway tracks. Guards fired from the wall, two escapees were captured, two still at large, Abbott had been jailed a year and a half ago from Chicago on receiving stolen property.
Brigadier General De Rosey Cabell reports all quiet on the Nogales border and dismisses rumors of large Mexican reinforcements south of Nogales Sonora. He notes no trouble since Wednesday night and no norte expected.
