Memiuis Aug 26 a sunrise duel over 15 paces between Maj Ed Freeman merchant and Ed Hamlin lawyer ended with Hamlin fatally shot. Seconds included Capt Dobney Scoles and Maj Thos FE Saunders for Freeman. Hamlin died within 10 minutes. Fighting in Cuba also reported with 600 killed or wounded near Santa Espirit as Cuban forces opposed Spaniards.
Two disguised robbers boarded a Missouri Pacific Express near Scott's Station in the morning, beat and bound the messenger, stole $10,800 in cash from the safe, and fled from the moving train near Jefferson City.
