Revolt Amid Kansas Outrages Reported Near Ellsworth
A letter from Ellsworth Kansas dated the 14th inst describes a raid by about 200 Indians on Spellmans Creek 16 miles east of Ellsworth. They beat and abducted Mr Shaw and his wife and sisters then assaulted other residents, destroying property before moving on. A detachment of 20 soldiers followed, with 50 to 60 settlers, and by Thursday Col Bentine led a company to confront the Indians who allegedly held several women in a house. The report notes continued killings and outrages on Solomon Creek and nearby settlements.
