Unions Threaten Nationwide Action Over Government Work
In New York on August 11, union spokesmen warned that a strike could halt government projects if carpenters demand a closed shop on federal contracts. They claim over 50,000 workers may quit, affecting army cantions, port terminals, action camps, and the New York way yard. About 3,000 carpenters are already on strike near York. The union seeks discharge of non union carpent ers or government-concili ation with firms employing such labor. Negotiations remain at a stalemate as another conference is planned. Some individuals have weak eyes and are locally disabled.
