An early morning telegraphic report notes turmoil in Paris with a harsh cabinet proclamation against alleged odious maneuvers. Headlines describe Prussia gaining a strategic edge, Weissenburg as a key fortress, and French setbacks amid a widening European war.
A Topeka visit by Senator Revels is announced for August 9. The report notes competition among Kansas newspapers with Quincy papers reaching Topeka and Lawrence ahead of them.
Paris reports a Prussian defeat of McMahon at Weissenburg with large French and Prussian forces moving to the front. Prussians evacuate Weissenburg. French claim heavy enemy losses and a near-simultaneous Crown Prince victory near Worth. Proclamations urge order, while riots and frontier activity unfold across Europe.
Washington reports the President will issue a proclamation of neutrality after returning from St. Louis. The proclamation will clarify neutrality laws for the people. Frelinghuysen is expected to depart for Europe late August to fulfill his role in the Alabama claims, with the President confident in his alignment with the government. Cavenaugh seeks clemency for ONeil and others convicted for a Canada raid.
In Denver on August 6 yesterday five and a quarter miles of track were laid on the Kansas Pacific gap and only thirty eight miles remain to reach Denver. Rail completion is expected next week. The city is overrun with desperate characters and garroting has become common nightly. Mining counties reports are favorable. Germans in Denver organized a society to aid widows and orphans. ELECTION Salt Lake August 6 the election passed quietly with partial returns showing two thousand votes for Maxwel. Mormon women largely voted and Maxwell was disowned by the church faction he boards with.
Aug 6 report from BarziegH shows North Carolina affirms a Democratic statewide majority by 5,000 to 10,000. Republicans Cobb and Dixon are likely elected in the first district and in the vacancy caused by Heaton and Thomas. In Winnsboro Conservative gains give the Legislature a large majority and five of seven Congress seats. Skipp, Conservative, is expected to win attorney general.
The Nathan Murder near 23d Street drew family attention as scuffling and a blow were heard at 2 a.m. Some Peckham family members recalled the sounds. Separately, Aparna Valentine, cashier at Erie freight depot Patterson, with larger deficits than first reported, is said to have been in Cleveland and no steps taken to arrest him.

Marie Von Elsner a 14 year old cantatrice headlined a program on Wednesday evening August 10 1870 at the Hall of the Leiderkranz opposite the Opera House with support from George R Pfeiffer and Von Elsner’s Quartette Club. Tickets were 50 cents with reserved seats at Pfeiffer’s Music Store. A horse left with an unnamed person is claimed. owner to prove property and pay charges. Sealed bids invited for grading and bridging work on the Quincy Missouri and Pacific railroad from East Branch of Missouri River opposite Brownville to Rockport Missouri about nine miles.
