Oscar Hammerstein dies in New York at best known as grand opera impresario
Oscar Hammerstein theater builder and producer of grand opera died in a New York hospital Friday night after a brief illness. A noted impresario he set records for presenting new operas in America and introducing singers who later rose to fame. Born in Berlin in 1847 he immigrated to the United States in 1863 and built Harlem and Manhattan venues, forging alliances with Koster & Bial and later selling his Philadelphia and Manhattan assets to the Metropolitan Opera in 1910. He described his life as a constant balance of risk, money, and art.

No Relief In Sight From Prices Federal Board Forecast Says No Relief
The Federal Reserve Board reports no relief from high prices in its monthly review. July shows price increases across many lines, with a bias toward maintaining current levels. Trade remains robust, labor fears shift to potential labor shortages, and cotton is projected to be shorter than earlier estimates. Banking remains sound and credit healthy, though material and skilled labor shortages bite in some districts.
