London reports German airships sighted over eastern and southeastern England with bombs dropped near the Thames estuary. The attack continues as Allied forces push on multiple fronts and battles rage across France Italy and Russia with various offensives and counterattacks.
The body of 24 year old John Hoener was found on his Tioga area farm near his father’s land. The shotgun wound to the head, the weapon across his body, was discovered under a shade tree. Some attribute the act to a troubled love affair while others blame extreme heat. Hoener was respected, industrious, and from the Hoener family locally well known.
Col Roosevelt hailed Hughes speech criticising Wilson Mexican policy as exposing diplomatic folly. He commended Hughes for clarity in condemning protection failures and the impact on Americans at home and abroad. Harding formally notified Hughes as Republican presidential candidate.

E N Woodruff, mayor of Peoria for ten years, announced Monday his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor of Illinois. He spoke in Havana where a large Peoria delegation arrived on a chartered steamer for the event.
A rain and wind storm in Peoria on Monday knocked out power for about an hour, suspended streetcar service, flooded basements, and damaged property estimated at $50,000. The heat broke from 100 to 72 degrees within 15 minutes as storms hit the downtown area and factories, with fires started by lightning. Coroner Eckard cites 11 heat deaths in Peoria on Sunday.
