Fire destroys steamers at St Louis wharf
Two steamers the Dr Franklin No 2 and Bluff City were destroyed and the Highland Mary was badly damaged by fire at the St Louis wharf on Tuesday morning. The Bluff City carried a valuable cargo mainly Indian goods and groceries worth about 30 000. The Bluff City cost 40 000 and was insured for 20 000. The Dr Franklin was valued at 6 000 to 7 000 with a cargo of about 13 000. No lives were lost though several narrowly escaped and a cook aboard the Franklin was badly burned. The origin of the fire is in doubt.
