A District of Columbia registry board rejects the women’s suffrage application amid unsettled political moves. Separate reports indicate possible ministerial appointments to Spain and a U.S. Brazilian mission, with Missouri likely to supply a new envoy.
The Iowa State School Superintendents Convention adopted a plan to send a committee from each district, chaired by the State Superintendent, to seek General Assembly amendments to the school law. Proposals include barring children under six from schools, two year terms for School Directors with staggered retirements and compensation, and defining directors duties as selecting and purchasing school sites. A resolution ending private teacher examinations was also approved. The day closed with the dedication of a West Des Moines schoolhouse, witnessed by a large crowd.
The Tenth Provisional Council of the Roman Catholic Church within the Baltimore province convenes here tomorrow. Bishops from the Southern States, Pennsylvania, and Delaware will attend. A large delegation of Odd Fellows departs tomorrow for the Philadelphia celebration on Monday.
The Grand River in Canada receded today, opening the Buffalo to Detroit Grand Trunk line. trains run on time. In Buffalo the bay ice remains firm with a blockage stretching about 25 miles offshore, hindering navigation.
Fire last evening at 9 and 11 Nassau street in a building owned by Dun can Sherman & Co. damaged the National Bank Note Company engraving department and drying room on the sixth floor. Loss to the company estimated between 25000 and 50000 dollars. Building little damaged.
Serious damage to the dam across the Hudson at sepans near Troy is reported. About 200 feet of the top of the dam has been carried away and water face reaches 21 feet at low water, the highest observed in years. Navigation of the Champlain canal may be seriously affected.
A large crowd of strangers is expected to attend the Odd Fellows celebration tomorrow. The event features a ball, skating, and a brain feat after pall, with the hall near capacity. About $3,000 has been spent on interior improvements.

Havana reports a Spanish transport reaching the port with a thousand soldiers aboard. There is still no news on the planned surrender of six hundred revolutionists near Cienfuegos.
Prorta April 24. J H Harris of Vermont Fulton county lost an eight year old son who hanged himself in a barn. Hours later Col T J Kinney’s eight year old son was found hanging in another barn. No cause given beyond home troubles. New York April 24. George Dalton, stock broker, shot himself in a Broadway carriage amid distress over stock speculation.
Sioux City April 24 The steam er Urelda bound for St Louis struck a snag about thirty miles above the city. While sinking her boiler exploded killing and wounding a large number. Fifty one are reported. The steamer Undine leaves immediately for the wreck with all the city physicians.
An April 23 dispatch reports an indignation-filled address to Gov. Burnside from about five thousand citizens denouncing alleged wrongs by Sprague and associates. Burnside replies, declining a public reception and debunking Senator Sprague's Rhode Island speech as untruthful.
Washington dispatch reports Gregory Benitz and G Herzo of the Paraguayan Legation arriving with a likely last effort by President Lopez to avert a crisis amid allied powers. Also notes Col Capron’s continued leadership of the Bureau of Agriculture and no personal clash between Abbott and Sprague.
In Madrid on April 25 a resolution condemning the conduct of the Patriarch of Antilles was brought up and then withdrawn after Marshal Serrano warned it would imply government censure. Salustiana Atazaga claimed France would respect Spain’s future government regardless of form. A London cable from New York reports rumors of a bold policy on Spanish Cuban belligerent rights to aid the insurgents and deter U S annexation, with Alabama claims under review. In London, a large Madrid crowd reportedly backed a republic amid a dispute between Prime Minister Serrano and Prim.

Wheat No 2 spring closed around 205, No 1 near 1 12 to 1 13, corn firmer with new highs and prices in city elevators, oats steady to higher, rye steady, barley quiet, pork around 31 50 cash with near term activity, lard soft, bacon quiet, and rice coffee and sugar largely steady with minor shifts. Provisions show quiet pork at 31 50 and firming oats with mixed grain activity across regions. Market tone remains cautious with slight gains in some grain contracts and flat tendencies in meats and staples.
Milwhukee and Cincinnati market notes show grain dull for No 2 corn at 48 cents, oats firmer around 360 to 370, barley nominal 170 165, soybeans at 110 per bushel for April, and wheat quotes near 199 to 105 for mixed lots. Provisions show pork at steady to firm levels with prime ribs and sides around 155, and lard and lard product bids mixed with declines noted.
