In intense combat, enemy forces breached front line trenches and seized Seicheprey. Late in the day American troops fought hand to hand, retook the village, and reclaimed most ground lost in the initial assaults.
The Lake Moor cargo ship, 4500 tons, on its maiden voyage with a naval crew, was sunk by a submarine in European waters around midnight April 11. Five officers and 39 enlisted men are missing. several officers were landed at an English port, and one British signalman, J. M. Higgs, was rescued. Details pending from Vice Admiral Sims.
Associated Press reports latent German energy remained in the battle zone but little surfaced by noon. The German setback Thursday slowed fighting, creating a lull though signs point to a possible large-scale resumption. Allies, with reinforced lines, wait for the next move.
American forces halted a German assault near Scicheprey north of Toul, repelling about 1,200 attackers with savagely fought counterattacks. German air and artillery faced anti-aircraft defense as American airmen shot down two enemy planes. German casualties were heavy and American lines stayed intact.

New York April 21 The New York Deutsche Journal owned by William Randolph Hearst has announced that after today's issue it will suspend publication as a daily paper printed in English. The move halts a long running daily English language newspaper operation.
An official dispatch from France reports Austria-Hungary faces a grim postwar debt, with heavy interest to Germany France England and potential access to American credit shaping its economic fate. The Arbiter Zeitung in Vienna notes even a German victory could not ease Austro-Hungary's dire political and financial perplexities.
Internal blast sinks American steamship Florence H in a French port on April 17 with about 41 crew lost. Navy reports say 34 were rescued by a U.S. destroyer. Survivors include Englehardt Johnson Livesay Rogers Smith Woodworth. Florence H built on Great Lakes, later rechristened, 52 civilian crew, 23 naval guard.

London reports a proclamation cancelling exemptions granted by tribunals and government departments to men aged nineteen to twenty three following the passage of the manpower bill. The move widens compulsory service by ending earlier special allowances.
In Brownsville Texas on April 21 a group of 115 Romani people including women and children sought entry to the United States. They alleged Mexican customs officers stripped them of all their jewelry as they applied for asylum at the border.

Tulsa April 21 Hellary Reimer a Russo German farmer from Collinsville Oklahoma pleaded not guilty in federal court to charges of obstructing the selective draft. He was remanded to jail in default of $500 bonds and said the attack on him was due to neighborly animus. Preliminary hearing set for May 2. his son claimed religious exemption and was placed in noncombatant service.
Secretary of the Navy Daniels spoke in Manchester on a liberty loan event, saying American sailors long for a day when the German fleet fights a fair battle. He stated the U S Navy will grow into the world’s strongest, with more destroyers built or under way than any three nations before the war. After the war, a vast fleet of transports would return trade and the American flag over a mighty marine.
