Edward E. Tucker, a commission merchant of this city, left his South Western street business on the evening of the 6th Just and has not been seen since. No cause for his sudden disappearance is known though a small amount of money was with him. Found dead: A Peoria bookkeeper named Strafford was found dead in his bed this morning.
Washington reports indicate the House select committee discussed the postal telegraph bill but did not settle its form, delaying favorable Senate action. Commerce statistics show imports and exports for 1868 and 1879 with notable value changes. Nominees Titus and Tweed were proposed for Arizona’s Supreme Court. Senate Naval Affairs favors a year’s pay to families of Oneida casualties. A new postal convention with Switzerland lowers England route rates to ten cents for half ounce. An unclear line notes a committee report and a $1,000 appropriation by the Post Office.
New York April 14 The Sun editorially claims an impending cabinet reconstruction with Fish slated to leave the State Department and become Minister to England. It says Mrs Hoar will resign as Attorney General and denies any intent to appoint Gen Butler, noting no cordiality between them. In Sionery Nebraska a bridge wreck and car plunder occurred at dawn as Indians seized the eastbound stringer, fourteen cars derailed. all train men except one brakesman fled to the next station. Westbound service delayed six hours while wreckage cleared. In Corrinne Utah reports say a South Pass expedition killed eleven natives near Wind River Valley, including Black Bear, with no white casualties.
Authentic advices from Cuba state General Jordan remains in the field at the head of patriot forces. General Goyerche was defeated near Boga last week. An engagement occurred on April 8 between Guyra and Ga gueron in the colored district with Spaniards defeated. Edward Nottes, a US citizen, was shot at Fort Cabanos on April 8 after Consul General Biddle telegraphed Washington for intervention.
Paris reports additional troops sent to Nevers as Fourchambaum strike persists. Gustave Florens sends a congratulatory address to the French Republicans from Irishmen.
Forty six Union printers at the St Louis Republic walked out today over wage issues not involved in the dispute. The stoppage affects the newspaper in the city on April 14.
Louisville on April 14 Phillip Pres, recently arrested for passing a $20 counterfeit bill, sues the Courier Journal for publishing the same. He seeks damages totaling 15000 dollars.
The Buffalo city tunnel under the Niagara River was approved by the Commerce Committee. Sumner introduced a bill to incorporate the Pacific Sub Marine Telegraph to aid telegraphic links between America and Asia, referred to Foreign Relations and ordered printed.
