El Paso reports large Villista raids reaching Sierra Mojada, Carrilo, and Torreon area. Villa possibly directing operations, with Canuto Reyes leading forces north toward Sierra Mojada. Rumors claim U.S. troops are near Parral. Villa aims to strike Torreon after American withdrawal.
The House on Wednesday without a dissenting vote approved a bill to federally accept the Kentucky Lincoln birthplace and farm from the Memorial Association which has maintained the site. The measure moves to the Senate. Former Speaker Cannon gave a long speech recalling Lincoln and attacked reformers, saying the martyred president did not belong to them.
In Loomis near Springfield Illinois a safe robbery attempt at the O. W. Deacon general store ended with an explosion after a thief used nitroglycerin to force the lock. Deacon struck the door with a sledge hammer triggering the blast that blew the safe open. He and onlookers were found uninjured amid the dust and debris.
Springfield April 8 unofficial returns show James R. McClure of Carlinville, Republican, and Harry Stuttle of Litchfield, Democrat, elected to their state central committees. Other results include Andrew Russel as State Treasurer, Samuel Savage of Tallula, and various party figures amid unsettled counts and remarks on wartime diplomacy.
Berlin reports German note on the Sussex dated April 10 details investigations by the navy high command into several ships. It identifies the Berwindvale possibly torpedoed after warning shots near Bull Rock, the Manchester Engineer sunk after crew abandoned ship, and the Eagle Point shelled after pursuit. It also discusses uncertain attribution of the Manchester Engineer attack and describes a long unnamed warship sighting in the English Channel, plus the Sussex case with a warship inference and an appeal for American government input and a possible mixed commission if disagreements arise.
Washington April 13 officials say expansion of U S forces in Mexico is under consideration. Gen Pershing’s pursuit of Villa will include preparations for any eventuality. Funston has full authority for border movements to protect advance columns and supply lines, while Scott denies orders for more troops yet and notes no plan to use national guard. Regulars only needed if operations widen beyond Villa pursuit.

Washington April 13 The senate favored action on a plan to build a large hydro electric air nitrogen plant for powder and fertilizer. A motion by Senator Hardwick to fix the fertilizer feature of the amendment to the army bill was defeated 47 to 24. The amendment, by Senator Smith of South Carolina, would cost about 15 million dollars. Surplus nitric acid beyond powder needs would be sold to farmers by the secretary of agriculture. Democrats and Republicans split on the motion with several names listed among supporters and opponents.
Six Villa prisoners brought to the border under heavy guard have been identified by soldiers and townspeople as participants in the Columbus raid of March 9. Major W. R. Sample announced that one man claimed as a Carranza soldier was a Villa deserter who joined the Columbus raid. The prisoners will be held here as investigators consider legal steps. Persistent bad weather hampered wireless, but Pershing’s campaign into interior Mexico is likely, with troops possibly operating on the Durango border.
Four men charged with involvement in manufacturing fire bombs for ships carrying munitions to the Entente were arrested in New York with ties to German steamship lines. Officials say bombs were loaded at a Hoboken plant and distributed by German interests.

Springfield DL April 1 Chicken Joe Campbell sentenced to hang at Joliet penitentiary April 21 for the murder of Mrs Odette Allen wife of former warden Alen of the state prisons was Wednesday granted a reprieve by Gov Dunne until January 30 in order that Campbell may appeal his case to the Illinois supreme court The body of Mrs Allen was discovered in her apartments at the Joliet prison on June 20 1915 Evidence tended to show that she had been attacked and the bed set on fire Campbell was a trusty at the penitentiary New York April 13 The New York Tribune for a score of years leading Republican journal will declare editorially today for the nomination of Theodore Roosevelt for the presidency by the Republican convention.
