Authorities expect the fire to be subdued by morning as victims are found with evidence of desperate escape and intense suffering.
The propellor Thomas sailing from New York to Galveston caught fire near Cape Hatteras and sank in sixteen fathoms after four hours. Crew members including Geo Drake John Cluthrow and Charles Mason and one seaman plus a passenger are missing. Most aboard reached Norfolk, Va. The captain cannot explain the fire's origin.
The steamship Gen Grant burned at the wharf in New Orleans and sank after midnight. Captain Quick attempted suicide during the blaze, apparently distressed over earlier losses. Only part of the cargo bulk grain oils and cotton seed burned. cargo on the wharf largely escaped damage. Separate Madison Georgia fire destroyed the business district and many homes with heavy losses.
April 9 legislative matters in Indianapolis show no quorum in three sessions and the Senate. It is expected newly elected members will appear and qualify tomorrow. Speaker A P Stanton declines reelection. Buskirk of Monroe county has been nominated by Republicans. Democrats’ field cards issued, but not public.
