A crowded forward column lists local trades and suppliers with names and addresses for carpentry plumbing packing and assorted shops. Notable entries include COPTIERS BROWN BALDER Fifth Street corner Seventh and Oak Street and W A WILLIAMSON carpenter and builder at 23 Vermont Street.
The Court remarked that majority views do not bind earlier actions and will take the matter under advisement. Separately, the House Committee agreed to add Cleveland Ohio to the ports of entry listed in the Western Merchandise Bill reflecting ongoing legislative adjustments.
In San Francisco Gen H Thomas remains under Col Willard and thirteen men were forwarded east this morning. Minute guns fired at departure from the Alcatarase after funeral rites at the Lick House with Bishop Kip officiating. A military officers meeting expressed condolences to Mrs Thomas and arranged direct transport via major rail lines to Troy, New York.
In the harbor the sailors aboard the British ironclad Zealons are afflicted by gold fever and daily desertion attempts occur. Gen Thomas’s body passed Lacarne amid a large crowd, with minute guns fired to honor the procession.
In Richmond Judge Underwood granted an injunction restraining Ellison from acting as mayor and denied the appeal as temporary until the next term. Ellison’s counsel announced disobedience to spark arrest and a possible writ of habeas corpus to bring the case to the Supreme Court. The decision also deemed the enabling act unconditional, affecting most state officers.
Late Havana dispatches report two Cuban victories over Spanish forces in the Los Semnos area with General Jordan said to have commanded the last clash. Madrid did not credit the Cuban claims. An address from Spaniards in Cuba to Spaniards at home opposes surrender or sale of Cuba and vows Spain will keep Cuba or abandon it in ashes.
Paris reports the first issue of La Concorde, led by Pere Hyacinte as chief editor. Police pursue the Penn queue affair suspects, with arrested parties described as workmen. Ecumenical Council may begin discussing infallibility, risking the French Ambassador not returning to Rome.
An examination of price currents and pork packing statements in the West shows errors corrected by which the total hogs packed will reach 2,656,479, up 15,738 from last season with an average weight of 208 pounds. Weather in Virginia City is fine with brisk gulch mining as parties head to Cedar Creek Mines.
A tele gram from Laker near St George Utah says Brigham Young and party will depart today via Virginia City for the Dakota meetings now held widely. The dispatch adds mass meetings are being held in the southern Territory to protest the Cullom bill. A mass meeting here tomorrow on the same topic promises to be interesting.
At Gen Schofield headquarters a meeting of Army of the Cumberland officers and soldiers adopted resolutions expressing sorrow for General Thomas’s death and offering sympathy to his widow. Gen Schofield and others delivered remarks.
After reading the journal, debate on corrections followed. Mr Trumbull sought open session for the President's message on the 15th Amendment. Mr Drake presented credentials for Morgan C Hamilton and J W Flanigan as Texas Senators elect, both taking oaths and seating on the Republican side. A memorial on abolishing the income tax was filed, and a bill to assign retired officers to Soldiers' Homes passed. The Ames case from Mississippi was called next.
Lawmakers debated a bill to abolish the Freedmen's Bureau and questioned funds use. Texas delegates were sworn in after disputes over affidavits. The House also examined Connor seating, with charges and defenses aired before final admission of Clark Connor Degener and Whitmore. A tariff executive session followed with Ways and Means defense. Logan proposed Irish Colonization Society incorporation. Stevenson pushed canal practicality inquiry.
