County tackles delinquent property taxes and road project
A county tabled tax delinquent issues as Commissioner Franklin McCasland called the system inefficient with properties owing more than their value. The board approved a Stantec engineering agreement for a 750000 road project on Quay Road 63 and Quay Road AP, with a 20 percent fee. County funds come from a state funded capital-improvements program, though Commissioner Mike Cherry criticized the 20 percent fee as too high compared with 6 to 7 percent in prior years.

A Tucumcari man Fernando Samaniego, 43, saw three counts of first degree criminal sexual penetration of a child under 13 and one count of second degree criminal sexual contact dismissed Sept 5 due to lack of corroborating evidence. Prosecution cited the child recanting key statements and no other witnesses or physical evidence. District Attorney Timothy Rose said questioning prior to the safe house interview was overly suggestive and the case lacked solid proof beyond the child’s statements.
