Quay County sheriff says Aubrey James Osteen, 77, was fatally shot May 14 after brandishing a firearm at healthcare workers and deputies at his home on Quay Road 49. Four deputies responded. the incident remains under investigation with identity of the shooter not released.
The historic Odeon Theatre in downtown Tucumcari reopened under new owner Jose Almeida after a May 6 closing. A ribbon cutting and Kung Fu Panda 4 screening drew about 100 attendees, with plans for future films, festivals, and community events. Almeida and wife Silvia, with help from outgoing owners Christy Dominguez and Robert Lopez, aim to revive the 1936 theater aided by a $10,000 Route 66 grant to repair the facade. Dominguez praised Almeida as a community-focused successor ready to lead the venue forward.
A district court in Roswell granted an injunction stopping the New Mexico Public Education Department from enforcing its 180 day calendar rule. The ruling halts the rule while the merits are determined, with more than 50 districts, including all Quay County districts, joining the suit. Critics say the rule would worsen budgets, end four day weeks in small districts, and erode local control.
