Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham selected Timothy Rose to become the 10th Judicial District judge, replacing Albert Mitchell Jr. who retired in February. The ceremony will be at the Quay County Courthouse in Tucumcari on April 1 at 1 30 p.m. Judge Donna Mowrer will administer the oath. Rose, 48, has served as district attorney since 2013 and previously worked as assistant D.A. and in private practice in Ruidoso and Logan.
About 500 people attended a Tucumcari vigil for New Mexico State Police patrolman Justin Hare gunned down March 15 west of Tucumcari while helping a motorist. Suspect Jeremy Smith of South Carolina was captured in Albuquerque after a foot chase. federal charges followed.
Federal charges filed Friday accuse South Carolina suspect Jeremy Smith, 33, of fatally shooting New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare, 35, west of Tucumcari on I 40, carjacking Hare’s vehicle and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Smith was wounded in a pursuit and captured in Albuquerque. He faces life or death for carjacking resulting in death and a mandatory minimum of 10 years for the firearms offense.
Jennifer Tackett of Tucumcari died after a GMC Sonata struck her scooter at South Third Street and Route 66 Boulevard around 6 30 p m March 18. Dennis Christopher Benavidez 32 was charged with driving on a revoked license and improper turning and jailed.
