Spelling winners advance regionals and Rattlers win opener
San Jon senior division champions Don McCoy and Harold Diaz will compete in the Quay County Spelling Bee next week. Tucumcari Junior High’s Dale Ann Pannell won, Libby Haller was runner up, and Jenny Williams placed third. The Tucumcari Rattlers beat West Las Vegas 11 to 1 as Mickey Gates went 2 for 3 and Dutchy Byrum and Jesse Davis 2 for 4 each. Pitchers Donnie Greer, Brian Priddy and Pete Jimenez worked two innings. The Canal Drive-In screened Poor White Trash with police supervision due to its abnormal subject matter, while the Odeon showed Elvis Presley’s The Trouble with Girls and House of Dark Shadows.
