Tucumcari City Manager Doug Powers contract extended 90 days
City Commissioners voted 3 to 1 to extend the contract of City Manager Doug Powers, expiring April 23, by 90 days to aid transition after the municipal election. Powers hinted at retirement, while supporters cited grants and projects like a $2.2 million Water Trust grant and a new 400000 gallon water tank. Tucumcari Main Street Revitalization Sparks Local Investment
Main Street Tucumcari reports about 2 million spent on the rail depot project with only 70 thousand from local taxes. In-kind donations, state capital outlay funds, and DOT money support a broader downtown revival including Paint the Town and a micro loan program. Since 2007 downtown added 19 new businesses, 45 jobs, and 205,700 dollars in private investment. The program aims to strengthen Route 66 links, restore the Princess Theater, and keep money circulating locally, stressing long term partnerships over quick fixes.
