County At Large Voting Backed by Quay County Board

Quay County Commission defends at large voting for county commissioners as broad access to choices and overall county representation. Chair Franklin McCasland cites state statute allowing the change and states every elector has a vote for the candidate best serving the whole county. District resident Daniel Garcia disputes at large voting calling it institutional racism and vows to continue the issue. The board also criticizes cuts to New Mexico DOT DWI funds and discusses a proposed county fireworks burn ban, with no action taken. The meeting included approvals of a DWI grant, a Rural Primary Health Care Act memorandum, and a DWI program professional services contract.

Dowell and Mitchell win Quay County primary races

Canvass confirms incumbent Sue Dowell as District 1 commissioner winner and Albert J. Mitchell as 10th Judicial District judge winner. Eight provisional ballots were reviewed, four counted. turnout reached about 2,000 of 4,883 eligible voters. Mitchell defeated Donald C. Schutte. Dowell praised by supporters.

Logan police kill black bear in public safety move

Logan officers shot and killed a two year old black bear in a tree in the Perch and Sunfish area near Ute Lake State Park after several unsuccessful tries to locate it. New Mexico Game and Fish advised putting the animal down citing habitual human food consumption and frequent residential sightings.
