Quay County is almost certain to stay in the red zone after the New Mexico Department of Health evaluates its COVID-19 caseload. With 53 cases since Nov 30 and a 10.8 percent test-positivity rate through Sunday, the county exceeds the 5 percent target and would need a surge in testing or zero new cases to move toward yellow.
County Assessor Janie Hoffman started a Make the Call campaign after learning of several recent deaths by self harm in the area. She distributed flyers and business cards urging calling the Lifeline at 800 273 8522 or local numbers 911 and 575 461 2160. Hoffman shared her own past struggles and urged counseling, saying discussions can save lives and asking people to reach out to friends and family.
The New Mexico Health Department logged five new confirmed cases in Quay County on Sunday with four in Tucumcari and one in Logan. The county totals show 311 cases and five deaths, 63 in December and 140 in November, with 111 recoveries.
