Dominion Lands Act revisited on homesteads and 160 acre entry

In the North West Legislative Assembly Mr. Davidson discusses the 1884 85 Dominion Lands Act rules restricting cancelled homesteads to 80 acres and 80 acre pre emption. Regulations were revoked allowing 160 acre entries on payment for improvements. Settlers claim injustice as newer entrants gain patents for 160 acres while they pay $200 for 80 acres. He urges ministerial action for equal justice and mentions plebiscite ideas on prohibition using popular will.

Grain and elevator progress in Indian Head

Our correspondent reports grain movement increasing with No 1 hard at 86 cents per bushel. D. H. McMillan and Co’s new elevator, run by Mr. William Anderson, has already stored four thousand bushels of wheat. The rink remains busy as skaters enjoy evening sessions and festive shouts.

Threshing and community events in Katepwe district

Threshing continues with cattle grazing in the valley amid good weather. Mr. Morton of Regina visited friend Mr. Todd. Mr. Bonycastle reportedly threshed 302 bushes of A No. 1 hard from 5 acres. Wheat prices drop discussed after fine weather. Friday night entertainment raised over $12 for school prizes with songs recitations readings and an encore filled program and a late dance.

Revival and local notes in Crescent Lake district

Rev W W Adamson begins revival services with fair attendance. F Baines injured when his gun exploded while hunting. Horace Mi and Mr Lock visited from Winnipeg. Wm Eakin secures contract to build the schoolhouse as lumber arrives. A case of horse shooting reported. W W C Middleton’s three horses shot, unclear shooter. Prohibition discussed. Ontario taverns earnings cited. Northwest Territories plebiscite question noted with call for responsible government.
