State safety officials remind drivers of Labor Day risk after a holiday weekend history of fatalities. With 117,000 more vehicles since 1941, officials fear higher traffic and urge early departures and sensible speeds. The three day period will see Highway Patrol on full duty to curb deaths.
Marlys Cordray of La Porte City and Irvin M Noethe of Dyersville were married Saturday morning at 9 30 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Fr John Ryan officiated the double ring ceremony before a floral backdrop as 150 guests attended.
Cedar Township 4 H clubs and families visited Bath Packing and John Deere Co on Thursday August 26. A noon picnic was held at Byrnes park. Attendees included the Maynew Wandschneider Hilmer Sho gren Wilson Henkle Gimm Kotouc Shafer Frank Coots Booth Pri mus Kray and several daughters and other relatives. About one tenth of the jruman family indulge in chewing the betel nut.

Brandon Special reports the Brandon school started the year on Monday August 29 with Superintendent Earl Luka and Principal Robert Cooks leading a staff including Willis Stainbrook Lois Foss Helen Newman Darryn Schoramer and Mabel Switzer. Bus drivers Melvin Larsen Dale Robertson Ray Geiger and Ivan Steinbeck, custodian Glenn Stonor, lunch coaches Jay Kiger and Glen Geltz. Supt Sulka convened a teachers meeting Friday afternoon in the high school assembly.
At the Black Hawk county 4-H fair the Big Creek Jr. Farmers club members received awards for multiple categories. Charles Philips placed second and third for his hogs. Kenneth Stahnke earned second for Shorthorn and baby beef. Duane Haberichter second for Jersey dairy heifer. Allen Harding second for rabbit. Keith Kullmer second for white Leghorn cockerels. Jim Kullmer first for white Leghorn pullets. Marvin Brecher second for two baby beef and Lynn Arthur third for Holstein and second for baby beef. The W. C. F and N bus schedule through La Porte City is revised effective Sunday September 11. Last bus from La Porte City to Waterloo shifts from 12 15 a m to 11 49 p m with other stops Cedar Rapids 10 10 p m Vinton 11 10 p m La Porte City 11 40 p m Washburn 11 55 p m and Waterloo arrival 12 10 a m. Mrs Oliver Jensen Mrs Clyde Craft and Mrs Russell Arthur attended the Waterloo Art Association meeting at Black's Tea room to view Mrs Lela Briggs and son Rodney's art showings.
In a Sunday afternoon city league game Fritz Kline’s Farmers toppled Elmer Rasche’s Green Hornets 17 to 13 after a wild rally. Ray Howrey and Harold Burrows anchored for the city, while Vanderheyden, Terrell, Burrows, Shaner, and Allen contributed on the mound and at the plate as the two sextets traded runs through seven innings and then again after a lengthy conference. The Farmers finally pulled ahead with a late scoring burst and a fielder’s choice by Howrey drove in the winning run.
In the Tournament of Champions at Waterloo Stadium La Porte City Red Birds rallied for two runs in the seventh to down Jesup 9 to 4. Johnny Keeran opened the inning with a double and Earl Strouecke and Bob Langford provided key hits as La Porte City erased a 2-0 deficit, then held on as Jesup added runs. The win sent La Porte City to the semifinals to face Sumner at 7 p.m.
The American Legion posts sponsor a ladies tournament for local country club members. All members are eligible, with at least two scores due by Labor Day to establish handicaps. Play-off begins Labor Day with prizes of golf shoes for low score in each flight and six balls for runners-up. Contact Ted Philpott at the clubhouse for details.
The La Porte Cary high school baseball schedule for the fall season was released by coach Howard Larson. The list includes Sept 5 Dysart there, Sept 7 Dunkerton there, Sept 13 Geneseo here, Sept 16 Brandon here, Sept 21 Dysart here, Sept 30 Geneseo there, and Oct 7 Brandon there. Returning lettermen include Arnold Harting Neal Rathjen Dale St Clair Ralph Kindera Harold Strohecker Dean Kruse Larry Peters Dick Brust Jim Johannsen and Marvin Yarrow as 27 players reported to practice.
The American Lutheran Church groups with the local congregation will sponsor an informal reception for the school faculty. It will be held in the church parlors next Thursday evening, September 8.
An Iowa farm economist urges adding lease clauses on whether tenants may cut hay or harvest seed from first year legume seedings. He notes past incidents where seeds or proceeds split due to vague leases, and offers a checklist and sources for lease forms. A separate item reports Mr. and Mrs. Don Richards visiting relatives in Eagle Grove.
Changes will affect trains serving La Porte City on the Rock Island line effective Sept 25. Local agent Lome Schreiber reports the southbound train arriving about 6 45 a m and the northbound about 7 30 a m with a full schedule to follow. These are the only two passenger trains providing local service.
Burial was held Friday afternoon at 2 o clock in Eagle Center cemetery for infant Michael David Bottema, stillborn at St Francis hospital Waterloo Friday morning Aug 26. Parents Henry and Sophia Bottema survive with brother Roper and maternal grandparents James Pecenka of Delle Plaine. Fr John Ryan read the committal at the graveside.
The La Porte City Gun Club announces the first annual membership shoot to be held at the club grounds five miles north of La Porte City on Highway 218. Traps open at 9 a.m. Labor Day with the program starting at 10 a.m. The trophy shown will be awarded to the winner.
