Local Y Leaders Audubon Group Meet at Abel's Cafe

Members of the local Y MGA district committee met with district chairman W. W Blasier of Jesup and district secretary Wa Schneider at Abel's cafe for a 6 30 o'clock dinner and get together. The group planned summer youth activity work and the Water loo YMCA pool projects, noting strong attendance in last year's swimming classes.

Memorial Day Services Observe War Dead with Parades

Memorial day ceremonies will honor fallen sailors with a 10:30 a.m. Legion march from the Legion hall to Creek Bridge, then Main Street to the theater corner and Westen Cemetery. Graves will be decorated. a memorial service, firing squad, bugler taps, and chaplain support accompany the observance led by Commander Don Richards. Memorials also at Eagle Center Cemetery at 8 o clock Monday.

Legion Chooses Two For Hawkeye Boys State

George Duane Rothmeier son of Mr and Mrs George Rothmeier northwest of town and James Tone son of Mr and Mrs David Tone of this city have been selected as La Porte City representatives for Hawkeye Boys State at Camp Dodge from June 5 to 12. Both were juniors in high school last year. The American Legion sponsors both.

Cub Scouts Have Parents as Guests At Pack Meeting

The May Cub Scout pack meeting at the school house Tuesday evening featured parents as guests. Four Cubs received awards including Bob Bellinger for wolf badge and Kenneth Parker for silver arrow on bear. An address on Character Building by Rev. Oliver Jensen opened the program followed by three reels of scouting activities shown by Keith Kulbner.

Union Memorial Sunday Services at Presbyterian Church

Union Memorial Sunday services will be held at the Presbyterian church Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. Rev. ME Shank of the EU. p. church will preach the sermon. The service will be patriotic in form. All churches are urged to unite their worship. Legion members should meet at the Legion hall at 10:30 to receive their colors.

Poppy Sale To Start on This Saturday

American Legion Auxiliary workers prepare to distribute veteran made poppies next Saturday to honor fallen soldiers. Poppy Day aims to keep memory of those who died in defense of America alive and asks wearers to show tribute. Proceeds fund auxiliary efforts for disabled veterans and children of veterans in La Porte City.

Local Lutherans to host Iowa District Convention in Waverly

Edwin Hoppe and Rev. H E Hahn will attend the Iowa District Convention of the American Lutheran church in Waverly from May 30 to June 3. St Pauls Lutheran Church of Waverly, led by Pastor Wm F Schmidt, D D, hosts with Wartburg College President C H Becker joining in. The convention opens with a Holy Communion service and sermon by Dr A W Sletkes, president of the Iowa district. The Iowa District includes about 56 000 members in roughly 150 congregations.

La Porte City Red Birds Rout Raymond in Weekend Win

La Porte City Red Birds defeated Raymond 17 to 6 on the Raymond diamond. Koepke started for Raymond, Melcher blanked the Rays over seven innings, and La Porte City exploded for a nine-run sixth inning to seal the win. The Red Birds stay undefeated in the Corn Valley league and host Garrison next Sunday at 2 15.

Lee Brallier is named postmaster for Lake Butler Florida in a letter received by Leland Brallier from Congressman Charles E Bennett. He will leave Thursday to join his family and has worked here since last September. The appointment was said to be merit based with official notification to follow from the Post Office Department.

Summer School Starts Tuesday in La Porte City

Harold D. Matt, superintendent, told parents that the summer session for La Porte City schools begins next Tuesday morning at eight, running until noon for six weeks. All grades from first through eighth attend, with high school students welcome for extra reading. Mrs. Eva Boyles is the instructor.

Mr and Mrs Krebs Sell Home at Maple and 4th Street

Mr and Mrs Martin Krebs sold their maple and 4th Street house, the former T C Kleist home, to Mr and Mrs Shelby Bellinger last week and will vacate by July 1. The Krebs plan to move their family to Waverly where they have run a cafe for months.

McLaughan Willetts Return After Two Week Visit

Mr and Mrs BB McLaughan and Matte Willett returned Sunday after visiting a son at Keithsburg and another son at Omaha Nebraska. The Omaha son came to fetch them and bring them home. They were gone two weeks.

Joan Schreiber daughter of Mr and Mrs Louie Schrieber of this city earned a bachelor of arts degree as part of 364 graduates at the 72nd annual spring commencement at Town State Teachers College on Monday morning May 23. Degrees certificates and awards were presented by Dr Malcolm Price president of the college.
