Fire Destroys Leonard Clark Farm Buildings and Equipment

Firefighters battled a blaze at the Leonard Clark farm in La Porte City from about 2 to 4 am destroying a large barn filled with hay straw and beans a second barn a hog house a grain shed a cob house and a 1968 John Deere tractor and planter also melting a nearby light pole and gas pump. Clark said livestock were saved and the cause and extent of loss could not be determined with buildings and machinery insured.

School Board completes hiring of staff members

La Porte City Community School Board met May 15 with full board present. Principal Lust proposed splitting some full year courses into semester offerings in Art, Industrial Arts, and Home Economics for 1972-73. A new medicine permission form was approved. Memorial Day programs set for Monday May 29 with American Legion VFW and auxiliaries Navy Mothers Boy Scouts Women's Relief Corps and others. Summer Story Hour Opens At Library On June 3 1972

The Summer Story Hour begins June 3 at the Library running 1 to 2 p.m. through July 29. The Annual Summer Reading Achievement program continues. Eighteen books required for school-age children. Next year’s kindergarteners may participate and earn credit if they can tell one interesting thing from the story. Certificates and pins awarded after 9 weeks.

Hiway Commission To Hold Hearings On Location Of I 380

The Iowa State Highway Commission will hold public hearings on the corridor location of Interstate 380 between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. Hearings occur May 24 in Cedar Rapids and May 25 in Waterloo at 7:00 p.m. Seven alternate routes are under consideration, with lengths from 44.9 to 56.4 miles, including Independence, Raymond, LaPorte City, Vinton, and Railroad options.

School Dismissal May 26 for 180 Day Year Ends

The school year ends Friday May 26 at regular times after 180 days of learning. Hot lunch served last day. Lunch tickets under a week cost 30 cents. charge tickets must be paid by then. Any refunds issued Friday May 26. School resumes Wednesday August 23 1972 for 1972 74. Two day fall registration planned for new and returning students.

Municipal Pool Opens Season May 27 in La Porte

La Porte City Swimming Pool opens for the season May 27 1972 with season ticket prices 7.75 for ages 12 and under 15.75 for 12 and over family 25.75. Single admissions 46 cents for 12 and under 55 cents for 12 through high school 80 cents for adults. Baskets included but rental 10 cents with single admission. Pool rules strict warned by Manager Larry Fuson. Adults nights Wednesdays and Fridays 9 to 10 PM. Information on swimming lessons available at the pool starting Saturday.
