The Progress Review will publish weekly comparisons of electricity rates paid by customers in other cities to the rates charged by their local providers. Central States Electric Co. at La Porte City faces scrutiny as patrons consider rates too high.
The Central States Electric Co announces electricity rates for Vinton Iowa. First 25 kilowatts cost 5 cents per kilowatt hour. next 50 kilowatts 5 cents. over 50 kilowatts 6 cents. a 10th of month payment discount applies. Minimum 75 cents per month.
Lawrence J. Perigo of La Porte City plans a 14 000 mile summer hiking journey to Cuba, Mexico, Canada, and 87 U.S. states. Starting from Iowa City after school ends, he will work as needed, carry gear and a camera, and travel by foot or boat through Havana New Orleans Tijuna San Diego San Francisco and Yellowstone on his route back to Town.
M E Murray receiver reports 8 checks prepared for the fourth dividend payment at the National Bank of this place. The payout will raise total dividend to 70 percent on the claim against the bank, with assets and dates not fully clear.
More than fifty people attended the Pevler meeting of the Spring Creek Farm Bureau held in the Orrin Frye room on Friday evening May 17. Mother's Day program gave entertainment and bouquets to the oldest mother and the mother who traveled farthest. Mrs. George Howrey attended from the former and Mrs. George Moberts from Waterloo. Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday June 13 in the M. D. Williams home.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Blanchaine hosted a dinner for relatives and friends to honor H. J. Blanchaine on his birthday anniversary. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Rayburn, Mrs. L. J. Ortman, Misses Orlin Ortman Relda Behrens and Irene Vanutta of Cedar Rapids, and Mr. J. Blanchaine with his son Raymond.
H R Halbfass former manager for Central States Electric Co in this city will take an extended vacation. His duties are taken over by L Fish who came from Cambridge Town to assume his new tasks. Fish a pleasant man will look after work during Halbfass absence. He and his family reside in a J C Rober residence on Walnut Street.
A force of men and women are employed at the Iowa Canning Co plant to can asparagus. This is the first trial of asparagus canning by the company to test profitability and employment potential. About 100 cases or 1200 cans will be cooked this season, with work finishing this week. The asparagus is sourced from local fields just northwest of town.
The May meeting of the Missionary Society of the Presbyterian church gathered yesterday afternoon in the church basement with strong attendance. President Mrs. D W Morgan led devotionals. Program featured Africa and the Negro in America with Mrs. Amelia Kemp, ukulele selections by Mary Hemsworth and Margaret King, and a report on the Presbyterial from Mason City by Mrs. E E Triem. Attendants also sang I Want To Be A Christian led by Mrs. F E Lehman and Mrs. H D Kline. hostess committee included Mrs. John R Buser, Mrs. D W Morgan, Mrs. J W Kline, George Banger, Earl Dexter, and Louisa Smith.
William Watson died at his daughter Mrs. Ivory Livy home in Monmouth NL on Tuesday night. His son in law and daughter Mrs. J G Kerr rushed to Monmouth after receiving word on Wednesday morning for the funeral service likely today. He had spent years visiting the Kerr household and had wintered with his daughter in Monmouth recently after a pneumonia illness.
Mr and Mrs Theo Ohrt mourn the death of their two months old daughter Eva Jean who died Saturday after a short illness. Funeral services from the Ohrt residence Monday forenoon conducted by Rev T M Nielzen of the M E church. Burial was in West View cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Ray Bowers and family have moved from Manly back to La Porte City to reside. They are temporarily living in a flat above the Haven Dry Goods store while awaiting possession of their Main street home.
Postmaster Geo Banger reviews rural routes this week as part of the post office department annual inspection.
La Porte City under coach W L Conder posted a productive baseball season across 1927 28 and 29 with 106 points for and 20 against in the spring tourneys and league play The squad claimed the Black Hawk County Tournament and the Center Point District Tournament while graduating seven seniors and returning two holdovers John Grosa and K Kober anchor the infield and outfield as batting averages top .400 among regulars and a host of juniors push for lineup spots next fall
The 1929 senior class was entertained last Thursday evening by Evelyn Kober and Viola Baird at the E. L. Pfalzgraf cottage near Kober lake. Chaperones were Mrs. Ezra Kober and Mrs. E. L. Pfalzgraf. The event featured boating and other diversions followed by lunch.
Mrs Earl Dexter was surprised by neighborhood ladies who gathered at her home to honor her birthday. Since May 19 fell on Sunday, the party moved to the next day for an afternoon visit and a picnic supper. A gift was given in remembrance of the day.
Memorial service set for Sunday May 26 at 11:00 am in the Presbyterian church with patriotic orders and Protestant churches attending. Program includes preludes, anthems, solos, and a sermon Memory and Duty by Rev W F Brecher. Decoration Day observed May 30 with processions, graveside ceremonies, and Gettysburg address by George Bunner Jr. and pageant by local groups.
The Literary Circle will hold the last meeting of the calendar year tomorrow afternoon at Dire. J. IT Gaon's home. Reports will be made and officers elected. An in lieu picnic will conclude the social portion of the gathering.
Members of patriotic organizations are urged to meet in their halls Sunday morning at 30-20 to attend Memorial Day services. Another assembly is planned for 1:00 PM on May 20 to participate in the Decoration Day program.
A joint meeting of Bruce township Farm Bureau will be held tomorrow evening May 24 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rob Gardner. A program is being prepared and lunch will be served. Ladies are requested to take sandwiches and silver for their own families. Everybody is invited to attend.
Mrs C E Wright, sister of Mrs L N Wright, died at her Huron South Oak residence. Death occurred May 17, and the surviving Wright family includes their husband, the oldest Wright brother, and a lone sister living in Nor ns Springs Iowa.
Pupils will present three playlets Billy's Awakening An Economical Boomerang and Who Got the Pig on Tuesday evening May 28. Pie cake ice cream sandwiches and coffee will be served. Public invited. Eva Boyles Teacher.
The final program of commencement week will be held in the auditorium this evening. Charles S Medbury of Des Moines will deliver the address on Modern Youth in a Modern Day. Principal Gerritt Vandersteep will present the class of 19% and Dr G I Nies will award the diplomas. Several thefts of flowers have been reported at the cemetery, including a case where the owner found flowers taken from her mother’s grave. Vandal(s) opened a cemetery gate and moved a new pavement, installing padlocks and a chain on two gates and using a heavy wire on the third. A concrete curb was damaged but the cars would not have fit if pavement had been in place. The incident underscores growing trespass concerns at the cemetery.
The Tourist Club will meet this afternoon at the home of Mrs A E Park. The business session includes the annual committee report by Mrs W M Blough Mrs C T Gates and Mrs E L Esher and election of officers for the coming year. The remainder of the afternoon will be spent socializing with Mrs I L G Evher Mrs TC Kline and Mrs W L Conder in charge. A picnic supper will be served.
Popular student Charles Hummell of Chicago, son of William and Dora Brummell, noted for leadership roles in the Forum, Art Guild, architecture club, and student councils. He earned four semesters in the honor society and designed a cover for the program. Kline's Dept Store and Mrs. Walther hosted the Lotug club. Wayne Paige attends graduation with his sister Dorthea.
The diary from Camp George H. Thomas in Chickamauga Park, Lytle Georgia, June 27 1838, describes slow camp life with new recruits arriving from Story County and La Porte City, shortages of clothing and rifles, and a hospital stay for Ellison E Blackford. It notes minor incidents, disciplinary actions, and a humorous milking scheme by Cowhands, while predicting ongoing drafts and payroll delays. La Porte boys head to Waterloo for enlistment, with most joining Company G of the 49th in Jacksonville and farewells paid by relatives, as the nation braces for war.
The Autxilaty of the American Tagion will run its annual poppy sale on Saturday. Poppies are crafted by disabled veterans and proceeds fund care for veterans in need.
The senior class play Kempy entertained large audiences in the school auditorium on Monday and Tuesday. Cancellations due to a baseball tournament moved dates. Ruth Wilder presented gifts to Miss Nelle Roghik and Miss Margaret Dausman for coaching and assisting with special numbers. Pastors Assigned lists regional church appointments following a Des Moines conference, noting Rev. W. F. Brecher’s return and several local clergy shifts.
