UNI Professor To Address 74 Graduating Seniors May 23

Howard Knutson Dean of the College of Education at the University of Northern Town will deliver the commencement address at La Porte City High School Tuesday May 23 at 8 00 p m He has served education in Town for 35 years as a teacher principal and superintendent and currently directs summer school The 33rd annual commencement features processional pomp and circumstance with Bruce Kline and Rev Phillip Baker among participants and Handel selections. The event marks the graduating class and honors seniors with a program led by local clergy and expected attendance of a large audience.

There’s No Business Like Show Business Swing Show Tonight

The Final Stages of There’s No Business Like Show Business plan a Wednesday May 17 swing show at 7 30 p m in the High School Gym featuring Vaudeville Broadway movies and other show numbers plus novelty acts. The annual spring art show by the art department complements the evening. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in La Porte City sponsors a Light A Bike campaign on Saturday May 20 at local school buildings. Hours are 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. for children to bring bikes for lighting and safety checks.

Creek Bank Steps Completed By Vo-Ag Senior Boys

Work on the Big Creek bank steps is finished. Vo-Ag senior boys designed planned and placed the structure after spending about five to seven hours building it. Railroad ties supplied by Keith Kullmer and Carroll Spence supported the project.

Junior High Students To Cleanup Roadways

La Porte City Junior High Student Council and Science Club sponsor a road clean up in and around La Porte City on Friday May 19 at 4 00 PM. Last year the effort yielded 11 truckloads of trash and a picnic at McFarland Park is planned afterward. Volunteers or donations for food should contact the Junior High Office at 3422378.

La Porte City FFA Chapter sponsors a bake sale at the high school during the Spring Swing Show on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds aid chapter expenses including state and national conventions, banquet, and an educational trip planned for May 27 to June 2.

FFA Soil Judging Team Places 3rd At Vinton Invitational

The La Porte City FFA Soil Judging Team of Alvin Bauer Ed Williams Gary Lentzkow and Lonnie Phillips placed third in the Vinton Invitational soil judging contest on Thursday May 1. Seven teams and 69 individuals competed. Others from the local chapter included LeeRoy Howard George Welch and advisor Ron Borton.

City Reimburses Residents for Dead Elm Tree Removals

La Porte City Council voted to reimburse residents within the last five years for removing dead elm trees from city property. Eligible expenses up to 355 dollars will be covered. checks available at the Mayor's office. Sanitation pickup starts May 22 at 7 a.m. Residents should place refuse at curb by then.

On Monday evening May Bth five La Porte City Webelo Scouts were accepted into the Boy Scouts of America in a candle light ceremony at the Junior High Gym. Wayne Lawnson the new Scout Master aims to boost enthusiasm for the rite. The two new scouts are sons of the Wagner and Harp families.
