Iowa towns sprayed curb to curb cut polio cases to zero

Officials at Iowa State College report that last year 66 cities that sprayed their towns had only one polio case, in a family moving from a non sprayed city. The data, presented by Harold Gunderson, suggests wide spraying as a public health advantage amid the polio epidemic.

Red Birds Open Season Sunday in Corn Valley League

La Porte City's Red Birds begin their Corn Valley League schedule Sunday May 15 at 2 15 against Gilbertville, a league newcomer. Bernie Breitbach will pitch for Gilbertville with Koepke starting for the Red Birds. Umpires for league games include H L Zimmer Galt Turner and Wally Neve. Home games follow June 19 and Aug 14 open dates due to Evansdale withdrawal.

Poppy Day Poppies Arrive From Hospital

The hospital made memorial poppies for sale on May 28 by disabled veterans in Des Moines. Mrs. R. Co. Bremer, acting chairman, announced the shipment to U. S. S. San Diego and the American Legion Auxiliary and said further details would appear in next week's Progress Review.

Miss Miller Honored With Faculty Dinner Plans For Week

Miss E Josephine Miller marks 47 years as a local schoolteacher with Miss Miller week May 15 to 21. An open house will close the week Sunday May 22 in the school auditorium. Community members are invited to mail cards letters and spread word to friends. Former pupils and school board colleagues are especially urged to participate. Details on Sunday observance to follow after committees are appointed.

Miss Miller who resigned after 47 years as a local school teacher was guest of honor at a faculty party in the school lunch room. Friends, board members, and former classmates attended, with gifts including a Samsonite travel case. Other faculty members announced to marry this summer and received Oscars as parting gifts.

Seventeen Girl Scouts Earn Second Class Badges At Court

Seventeen girls from intermediate Girl Scout troops received their second class badges at a Court of Awards in the school lunch room. Troop 3 leader Miss Barbara Allen and Troop 4 assistant leader Miss Marie Trettin presented the awards to named scouts. The event included a supper, a melodrama, trail-sign explanations, and an outdoor fire demonstration, with a gift shower for Miss Trettin who is to be married.

Local band to perform at Band Jubilee in Waterloo

The La Porte City high school band will appear at the Northeast Iowa Band Jubilee in Waterloo this Saturday. The group plays a concert, marches in the parade, and participates in the massed bands evening concert. Lead by Band Stand A in Lafayette Park, the half hour 9:30 to 10:00 am concert precedes the 11:30 am parade led by the University of Town’s Scottish Highlanders. Miss Melody candidates compete at 3:00 pm, with Pat Sellers as local entrant, before the 7:40 pm auditorium program and massed band finale featuring 41 bands and 1957 members.

Rice Extends Invitation To Band Musicians

Harlan Rice conductor of the La Porte City concert band invites all musicians who play or have played an instrument to join the community band for summer concerts. Rehearsal at 7 30 p m Tuesday May 17 in the band room.

Mr. Ford of the Hammond Organ Company Des Moines will play at the morning service at the American Lutheran church starting 10 am and give an evening concert at eight pm open to the public. A free will offering at concert end will go to the church organ fund.

Town and Country Quiz to Air June 10 in La Porte City

The Town and Country Quiz will be broadcast on WHO radio Friday evening featuring two four member teams one from town and one from farm. Clay Rusk will quiz master the Lions Club sponsors the event and local talent provides the rest of the entertainment for an hour and a half. Tickets will be on sale soon.

Mrs Etta Strohm Fractures Hip At Home

Mrs Etta Strohm who will be 87 May 2 fell at her home Sunday while talking with her son George. She fractured her left hip, was taken to Presbyterian Hospital where the bone was set and pinned. She improved yesterday and sat in a wheelchair briefly.

Tone Passes West Point Entrance Examinations

Maurice Tone son of Mr and Mrs David Tone announced to The Progress Review that he passed his entrance exams for the West Point Academy taken at Fort Sheridan Illinois. He expects a decision by June 1 on whether he can enter this year or must wait a year while the academy remains at capacity. Tone currently studies at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

Mrs. G Mengel Dies at 79 After Long Illness

Mrs. George Mengel Sr died Sunday evening at her farm near La Porte City at 6 15 after 19 days bedfast age 79 Embolism and complications were the cause Her death followed her husband’s passing on April 9 She was born Elizabeth Ballheim April 2 1870 in Wisconsin and lived in Iowa since age one Surviving are three sons Henry Archie George two daughters Anna Dunkelberger and Alvin Dunkelberger 12 grandchildren four great grandchildren and one sister Anna Ballheim Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Evangelical United Brethren church with Rev W D Winter and Rev M E Shank in charge The body lay in state at the Johannsen funeral home before graveside rites in West View cemetery
