Local appeal urges immediate planning for a district wide fly control program. It cites last year’s partial effort, DDT resistance concerns, the need for sanitation, multiple sprayings, and active community cooperation to prevent breeding and protect homes from flies.
La Porte City consolidated school entries excel at Iowa City district small groups contest winning two firsts and four seconds. The mixed quartet of Carol Froning Marilyn Snow Tom Gill and George Rothmeier earned first ratings and advance to Perry for the state small groups contest. Other entries earned seconds: Carol Froning and Carmen Abbott piano solos and Tom Gill with Ronnie Fultz tenor solo.
The Jubilee consolidated school will close Friday May 13 and hold graduation exercises for seven eighth grade graduates at 1:30 PM in the school auditorium. County superintendent H Hartman of Waterloo will deliver the address. The class includes Betty Lu loft Lorraine Riensche Claudia Wayson Barbara Bauer Edward Jesse Roger Koob and Jimmie Farmer. The motto is Never Fall and colors yellow and blue. Principal Mrs Marlin Powers will present the class to Supt Hartman.
Mrs Frances Nies librarian announces fresh additions on library shelves including Death Be Not Proud and To Hell and Back among others. New titles span authors Gunther Gipson Sandburg Clyner Maas Leeming Murphy and Grace Stone Hill plus Carolyn Keen works and The Greatest Story Ever Told.
James W. Fleming son of J W Fleming of La Porte City Iowa has been named Ward Activities Council president at Iowa State College Ames April 30 Ward members are off campus residents in Ames who run athletics and social programs to match dormitory residents Buy it in La Porte City.
La Porte City consolidated high school will hold commencement exercises Thursday evening May 12 in the auditorium. The program starts at eight o clock with Gary Lenhart of WHO Des Moines delivering the address on Memories and Visions. Alfred Pierce, principal, will present the awards to the graduates, listed including Duane R Anton and many others.
Girl Scouts plan a Court of Awards for Tuesday afternoon May 10 after school. The event, held with a picnic for families, will award Second class badges. On April 21 Troop 4 hosted a tea for mothers, with Delores Krebs receiving a Second class badge and a skit entertainment by mothers.
Directors of the La Porte Building and Loan Association met last week to elect new officers to replace the late C. A. Brust. Dr EC Pendlebury was elected secretary and Dr. W F Christopher was elected to the board of directors.
The La Porte City high school's junior class will honor graduating seniors with a Saturday May 7 banquet at 6 30 pm in the high school gymnasium. The theme is Bon Voyage 49ers and colors blue and silver. Preparations are underway for extensive entertainment and details will appear next week in The Progress Review.
Arrangements completed to offer free instrumental lessons for La Porte City Consolidated School students through summer. Harlan Rice, the local instrumental music instructor, will oversee beginner classes in flute, clarinet, snare drum, and trombone. Interested students should contact Mr. Rice to arrange schedules. Mrs. Charles Oren returned home Friday from Deacon ness hospital in Marshalltown after five weeks as an eye operation patient.
Baccalaureate services for the 1949 senior class will be Sunday evening May 8 at eight o'clock in the La Forte City High School auditorium. Rev H E Hahn will deliver the sermon titled Our Prayer for You. Invocations, benedictions, and scripture readings will be led by local pastors. The girls choir and song selections will feature The Lord's Prayer and God of All Nature, with audience participation in Are Ye Able. Mrs Nancy Jacobsen will play the processional and recessional.
The Big Creek 4-H meeting on May 2 was hosted by Marvin Brecher with President Lloyd Hager presiding. A demonstration on how to keep a tractor belt tight was shown. No program May 29. An upcoming on air segment is planned for station KWWL at noon. Practice for the program set for Friday at Russell Miszner's home. Refreshments by Mrs Brecher were noted as very good.
A silver wedding anniversary for Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wienands of the city was observed Sunday with family and friends from multiple towns. Open house ran 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 at their Commercial Street home, featuring a pink and white decor, a two-tiered cake, and readings by Mrs Vaughn Craft.
Daniel George Stevens son of Daniel F Stevens of Bassett and Helen Stevens was born October 29 1924 in Waterloo. He married Patricia Eastman February 2 1943 and was drafted May 6 1943. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines with 249 Port Co 496 Port Battalion and was killed September 26 1944 when his ship struck a mine near Low Island. Buried at Los Negros. He earned Good Conduct World War II and Asiatic Pacific medals with two stars. Survivors include his father a daughter Rebecca Lou his wife now Mrs John Lavin of La Porte City his stepmother a half brother and half sister. He was preceded by his mother in January 1930.
Application blanks for the World War II veterans bonus are now available in La Porte City. Veterans can obtain them from the Veterans of Foreign Wars at their club rooms over Jaybee's Tavern or from the American Legion via post service officer Elmer G. Rasche.
Mr and Mrs Wienands were married May 1 1924 at the Evangelical parsonage La Porte City by Rev R B Kearney. They farmed near La Porte City Bruce township before moving to town in 1936. He works in trucking she a relief operator at the local telephone office. They are Methodist and she belongs to the Navy Mothers club. They have three sons Dale of Waverly Dean and Richard at home and one grandson David Wilen ds.
The Spring Creek Plungers met at Virginia Back's home on Saturday April 30 with seven members and one visitor present. Leader Mrs Clyde Craft demonstrated custards pies and cakes, and members practiced a skit and sang new songs for the year. Plans were made for a bake sale to be held Saturday May 21. A delicious lunch was served by Virginia Back and Mrs Buck Re-Borter Virginia Buck.
Mrs. Don Kearns entered Presbyterian hospital Sunday for observation and treatment. She is slated to stay about ten days as doctors monitor her condition.
