Plans are set for a Palm Sunday Vesper at the American Lutheran Church on Sunday March 26 at 7 30 p m. The program features readings songs and an interpretive dance Lord of the Dance exploring religious expression through history. The Vesper is directed by Mrs Priscilla Bair with wide church participation.
A story hour is scheduled for Saturday April 1 at 1:00 PM at the La Porte City Public Library. Further information will be provided in next week’s paper.
Mrs. Terry Hanlon of Colonial Manor Nursing Home and the La Porte City Fire Department seek RN LPN nurse aides and Red Cross trained individuals in the La Porte City area to compile an emergency contact list. Call 942-2587 after 4 PM with details.
Members of the La Porte City Cemetery Association urged families to help keep the cemetery tidy and dignified by following hints. Do not plant bushes or trees on lots, and avoid digging holes. Place flowers near headstones, remove glass containers, and remove wreaths and winter decorations from April 15 to October 15. Wire should be picked up when removing arrangements.
Connie Mitchell Wilken of La Porte, a senior in the University of Iowa College of Nursing, earned a 3.5 or higher GPA for the fall semester and received a letter of commendation from Acting Dean Ella Rasmussen among 122 students.
Ed Wellner fund contributions continue as donations are transferred from the Legion account to the Wellner family to help cover medical and recovery costs after the snowmobile accident near Brown's station. Friends and the American Legion have contributed 163.99 dollars, with further gifts welcome at La Porte City State Bank.
The unique Pony Express Ride in Iowa features saddle clubs raising funds to aid Easter Seals for Crippled Children and Adults of Iowa. Don Countryman explains the event began in 1968, grew from a $10,000 start, and culminates the day before Easter with horseback rides, meals, and a dance to help disabled children and adults across all 99 counties.
La Porte City junior high principal Arthur Finke will present at the National Association of Secondary School Principals convention in Anaheim California. He will discuss the La Porte City Junior High Health and Physical Education Program noted for fitness, breadth, and student enthusiasm. Finke and his wife depart Friday for the March 17 to 22 event.
The Adult Farmer Class will gather in the Vo-Ag room this Wednesday night March 22 at 8 p.m. A film titled Farming in the Year 2000 will be shown followed by Charles Beard of Waterloo Savings Bank as a resource person on wills and probates. He will answer questions on land transfer between generations to keep it intact. This event targets farmers and promises practical guidance.
The La Porte City Co-op Elevator hosts a spring appreciation and Feeding Bonanza on Monday March 27. The event offers Free Gifts with Felco or Kent Feeds purchases and door prizes, with registration not required to win. Free refreshments will be served all day.
Four La Porte City wrestlers earned first team honors: Russ Reiter 98 Ibs Brad Richards 112 Ibs Galen Pettengill 145 Ibs and Nick Miller 185 Ibs Doug Riter and Jim Clark named to the second team Pettengill Jim Steffen and Jeff Zea received honorable mention
