A 1903 record shows 466 fireworks deaths in the United States while last year recorded only one. The era drifted from clumsy horseless carriages to sleek modern autos, with fatal Fourth of July incidents rising to 407 lives in 1903.
La Porte City youth golf lessons attract only 16 teenagers, prompting summer recreation director Chuck Irwin to warn the program may be dropped without increased signups. Lessons start Tuesday July 3 at 8:30 a.m. for teens 12 and older and 10 a.m. for adults, free through the city council.
Mrs. Herbert Johannsen, president of the La Porte City BPW club, will attend the National Federation of BPW Clubs convention in Miami Beach July 1 6. She travels by Greyhound from Waterloo via La Porte City with 39 northern town club members and joins Iowa delegates led by Mrs. Martha Pierson of Red Oak. The event, expected to draw over 3 000 women from the U S Hawaii Alaska and abroad, features national and international speakers and a traditional Iowa breakfast at the Hotel Eden Roc.
Celebration in LPC July 2 3 4 features speaker Joe E Brown guest. fund drive underway to build a dedicated Scout building on city property near water works. Project aims to serve Boy Scouts Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts with a 240 by 40 foot concrete block fireproof facility and surrounding park cleanup. Donations urged through bank accounts and Scout leaders.
Summer recreation schedule lists events from July 1 to July 6 at LPC Geneseo Vinton Gates Waterloo and local churches. Activities include playground openings tee m golf lessons adult golf lessons swimming boy and girl age groups youth baseball peewee and midget games plus church league softball and a teen age dance with locations at LPC Golf Club Gates Pool and local towns.
City council discussed a proposed municipal swimming pool with a voter referendum, possible 1957 construction at an estimated 60000 and options for funding. They also weighed a new plat map at high cost and approved using municipal land for a scout camp near Ble Creek while papers noted local obituaries and upcoming three day 4th of July celebration events with music dances and fireworks.
Rev D. Corrick is reappointed as pastor of First Methodist church in La Forte City for a fifth year by the North Iowa Methodist conference in Mason City. The report lists neighboring appointments and names, including Wagner at Geneseo and Gaul at Garrison Mt Auburn, with retirements and naval reserve chaplaincy noted.
Funeral services for Mrs. Alice A. Robe 95 of Waterloo were held Monday at 1 30 p m at First Methodist Church Waterloo with Severenner pastor officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery Vinton. A pioneer of the area she was born December 4 1859 and married Charles Robe December 11 1879. She died Friday morning from age related complications. Survivors include two brothers a son a daughter two grandsons and three great grandchildren. her husband and two sisters and one daughter predeceased her.
D G McQuilkin and Joe E Brown met during the Iowa Wesleyan College alumni banquet in Mt Pleasant. The gathering recalled college days and featured reminiscences from attendees.
A representative from Volta Studios Des Moines will be in La Porte City at the Legion Hall Thursday 4 30 to 7 30 p m with proofs for children’s pictures. Parents who had pictures taken should attend to choose the image for the series. Also noted is Michael C Genter Jr addressing Navy induction at Spirit Lake in June with his new mailing address at Great Lakes Illinois.

Mrs Dean Vaubel received a superior rating for her short story The Challenger in the Tonal Federated Women's club competition. The award was announced in the federation magazine. Terry Chester, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Chester of Phoenix, recently graduated Navy electronics school at Treasure Island San Francisco and is on 30 day leave from the Navy Auxiliary Air Base at El Centro California.
Funeral services for Martha Willett 89 a longtime resident of La Porte City were held Tuesday at Johannsen Funeral Home with Rev Z J Hougham conducting and organist Mrs Herbert Johannsen providing music. Burial followed in Alpha Illinois family lot with pallbearers named. Willett born November 23 1866 in Stark County Illinois moved to Alpha then La Porte City in 1923 and lived with her sister Mrs E D McLaughlin for 35 years survived by Mrs McLaughlin and seven nephews with two brothers and two sisters predeceased.
