Overnight Hi Y Camp Set For Next Monday At Devil's Backbone

All boys aged eight to 17 are invited to the Hi Y overnight camp at Devil's Backbone State Park. Meet at the schoolhouse Monday at eight o'clock with a blanket pillow eating utensils and 35 cents. Participants should bring supplies and be prepared for camp activities.

Stewart severely hurt in auto accident last Thursday

Hugh Stewart remains in serious condition at Presbyterian Hospital after an auto crash last Thursday night. He suffers facial cuts, a broken upper back vertebra and severe internal injuries. John Hayslett has minor injuries. The Chevrolet coupe left the road and toppled into a roadside ditch. both occupants were thrown free. Passengers in a nearby car found Stewart in a gulch and Hayslett in a beam. they were rushed to hospital as medical aid arrived.

Services Held at Waterloo for Ray Barnes

Funeral services were conducted Monday at Kearns Garden Chapel in Waterloo for Ray Barnes a former local resident who died Friday at his daughter Mrs H H Trunnell's Waterloo home He was 66 born near Mt Vernon and interment followed at Elmwood Cemetery in Waterloo Rev Robert Ryerse of Walnut Street Baptist Church led the service.

Betty Sawvell and Jean De Neut Wed at Lutheran Church

Betty Sawvell and Jean De Neut were married Saturday at 2 PM in a single ring ceremony at the American Lutheran church. Rev HE Hahn officiated. The couple, both of the area, will reside in La Porte City. A small reception followed at the groom’s mother’s home with family and close friends in attendance.

Mrs. Etta Strohm Dies at 74 In Waterloo Hospital

Mrs. Etta Strohm a longtime La Porte City resident died Saturday night at 7 or 8 oclock in the Presbyterian hospital at Waterloo from complications after a hip fracture. Born in 1862 in Lena Illinois she moved to Tama county as a child and married Charles Strohm of Traer. She lived in La Porte City from 1910, survived by son George Strohm and two daughters Mrs Charles Herd and Mrs Wm Mowbray, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Johannsen funeral home with Rev Henry Schray presiding. Burial was at Crystal cemetery near Traer. She was active in the Presbyterian church and its organizations and sang in the church choir for many years. She belonged to Lyra Chapter 0 E and White Shrine lodges.

Lions Mark 25 Years of Charter Club History

La Porte City Lions Club observes charter night and ladies night with banquet in the school dining room. Twenty five years since the charter was granted three original members remain. Dr L F Bailey Dr R B Fields and Jesse O Kober honored with 25 year pins Fields absent. Dale R Snyder receives master key for 15 new members and Keith Kuilmer for five years perfect attendance.

Barnes Family Obituary Noting Long Waterloo Ties

The obituary recalls a Benton county native who married Agnes Gammon in 1909 and lived 37 years in Black Hawk county. Surviving children are George Barnes and Mrs. H. H. Trunell of Waterloo, with services attended by Mrs. Alma Burling and others. Visitors last week included Mr. and Mrs. Harry Soesbe of Seattle.

Local Summer Recreation Program Sees Strong Attendance

Howard Larson reports high turnout in the summer recreation program with numerous activities. Baseball practice, swimming at Waterloo pool, basketball sessions, roller skating in Vinton, and a full schedule of forthcoming games including a Friday match at Belle Plaine and a series of Cedar Falls and Dysart contests.

Services Held Wednesday for Aug Buckholtz

Aug William Buckholtz a long time resident of the community died at Christie Convalescent Home Cedar Falls at 4:00 a.m. Monday age 79 after years of illness He was born April 2 1870 near Baraboo Wisconsin and married Mary Stahnke in 1897 He lived in La Porte City area and Olumwa before retiring to town He is survived by daughter LeRoy Weisbard Cedar Falls granddaughter Bevelyn Weisbard and stepson Clinton Stahnke Eldorado Springs Mo plus brother Edward Buckholtz Milwaukee Wis Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Lutheran faith.

Business Census to Start Here About July 6

The federal business census begins July 6 with Esther Semel leading enumeration in La Port Sbour. Semel is from Buckingham. Over 4,500 workers nationwide are employed to conduct the census under James Babcock of New Hampton supervising a Waterloo district office. Death Summons Mrs. G. Bellinger Here Thursday

Mrs. G Bellinger of this city died at her Walnut Street home Thursday night at 11 55 after a long illness from age related complications. She was 81 and had been bedfast for five months then critical for three days. She lived in La Porte City 70 years arriving at age 11 from Franklin Grove Illinois with her parents. She married George Bellinger October 28 1884 and they enjoyed over 64 years of marriage. They farmed west of the city before moving to Walnut Street 35 years ago. Surviving are her husband two sons Warren and Ralph both of La Porte City five grandchildren Shelby Ross and Inez Bellinger Mrs Donald Gates Mrs Robert Robins and one half sister Emma Schultz of Amboy Illinois. One half sister and one half brother preceded her in death. She belonged to the Methodist church and W RG Services Sunday funeral ceremonies were at Johannsen Funeral Home at 2 pm with Rev Oliver Jensen of the Methodist church officiating. The singing included In the Garden and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere. Pallbearers were Roy F Wachner Sr Ray Runyan August Stahnke John Betts Fred Lehman and Ralph Yarrow. Burial was in West View cemetery. Out of town attendees included Emma Schultz Amboy Illinois Etta Monigold Ralph Kramer Lenmarck Illinois Merle Harris Gerald Harris Burlington Elizabeth Eason and son Waterloo Willenbrook Auburn Eva Bellinger and Robert Robins of Rockford Illinois. Rev J LaFavre of Cedar Falls conducted a later service at Evangelical United Brethren Church. Korene Stahnke sang Count Your Many Blessings accompanied by Mariys Stahnke.

La Porte City beat the Comets 7 to 6 in a late Sunday game. Waterloo Red Birds tied the score in the seventh with two errors and a double, then pushed the winning run across in the ninth on a key rally led by Strodecker and Keegan.
