Residents recall near miss when youngsters set off fireworks near adjacent tank plants. Fumes exploded and could have destroyed tanks and plants. State law prohibits shooting fireworks and carries penalties. local towns coordinate to enforce and prevent risky displays.
Emma Mae Young daughter of Mrs Catherine Young of this city married Warren D Turner son of Mr and Mrs Earl Turner of Traer in a double ring ceremony at the Brown Church. Officiant was Pastor F L Hanscom with organist Mrs Hanscom providing nuptial music. The couple, costumed in light colored attire, received guests at Neeleys Cupboard Waterloo for a reception. They plan a summer honeymoon and will live in Waterloo where the groom works at Chamberlin's. The bride's family attended in full force. The groom previously worked in the home of his sister in Clear Lake.
Miss Ann Gill daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Gill and Robert A O Connor of Waterloo were married Monday June 21 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church La Porte City in a nine oclock High Mass. Fr Clair Drummy officiated with organist Mrs Frank Campbell and singers James Gill Mrs Norman Maas and Mrs Ralph Hoppe providing music. The double ring ceremony was witnessed by about 150 guests with ornate floral decorations throughout the church.
A fatal accident near La Porte City claimed Judith Elaine Hospodarsky, five, struck crossing Highway 218 by her home. Driver R E Robinson was not held responsible. Separate wedding coverage details Judith’s bridal gown, bridesmaids, attendants, and a 10 am reception at the American Legion hall. Funeral services set for Friday at the Methodist church with a bereaved family list and interment at West View cemetery.
Miss Esther Maria Langskov of Cedar Falls and Robert Allen Case wed at Nazareth Lutheran Church Cedar Falls on Sunday afternoon June 20 at 3. The ceremony featured a double ring service by Rev. duste sen with lilies, gladiolus, and delphiniums. Attendants included maid of honor Donna Langskow and bridesmaid Juanita Wolf. best man Richard Gardner and groom’s friend Robert Brock. A reception for 90 followed at the bride’s home. The couple plans a farm home near La Porte City.
Miss Marilyn Karkosh of Reinbeck and Mr. O'Connor, of Milo Bennett's Linotype School, wed with a lavender and white table setting. Guests came from Hot Springs Arkansas, Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Vinton, Dysart, Traer, Waterloo, Mason City, Reinbeck and Buckingham. The couple will reside at 311 Lafayette Street Waterloo after June 28.
Don Angel attended Hawkeye Boys' State at Camp Dodge June 6 to 13. He reported on government study and elections, noting his nomination for senator and county agent role, 24 softball teams, swimming, meals for 720 attendees, and evenings of campaign speeches by candidates and officials. Des Moines trips and new acquaintances added to a week of athletics and classes.
Shelby Bellinger announces the opening of Shelby's Feed Store this Saturday. The store will carry Vitamo and Wayne seeds and mill seeds, with Mr. Bellinger continuing as a hay, straw and grain dealer and buying soybeans. Open house runs 6 to 9 p.m. with free coffee and doughnuts.
Transportation will be provided for all children ages 15 to the Black Hawk county Youth Frolic Day in Waterloo this Saturday. Those who can provide their own transport should do so, and those without transport must assemble at the Mayor's office at 6 30 a.m. The event, sponsored by the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, is free and tickets are available at local groceries.
Mr and Mrs Herman Bauer observed their 40th wedding anniversary with a June 12 celebration at the American Legion hall attended by 135 relatives. A noon covered dish dinner featured a four tier cake and a musical program with relatives from Waterloo Denver Dysart Garison Manchester and Independence.
The Local Camera Club met at Abel's Cafe last Thursday to organize and outline plans for the La Parle City area. The next meeting will be July 1 at Max Thompson's home to present a constitution and by laws, elect officers, name the club, and allow additional charter members to join while the charter remains open.
La Porte City's Red Birds exploded for 16 hits including a home run three triples and six doubles to beat Keystone 20 4. Keegan and Strodecker led with four hits apiece while Keegan topped with a home run and two doubles. Next Sunday La Porte City travels to Garrison for a makeup game.
