Fire destroys Logan Milling Co. in La Porte City Friday

A Friday morning blaze consumed the Logan Milling Co. building on North Commercial Street, leaving only brick walls. The estimated loss approached 20 thousand dollars, with machinery, grain, and fuel oil destroyed. Fire crews battled for four hours but only contained the fire, partially insured, and the site will be examined for the cause. Leo Kearns led the mill operations in later years.

Summer School Enrollments Stated by Supt Matt

Supt Harold D Matt of the La Porte City schools reports 45 students enrolled for the summer session at local schools. The program aims to ease fall work with help sessions, listing grade hour schedules from seventh and eighth from eight to nine, fourth and fifth from nine to ten, and second and third from ten to eleven.

McGill Heisel Nuptials Read At La Porte City Church

Miss Margaret Janine McGill and John Elmore Heisel wed at First Presbyterian in La Porte City with 150 guests. Ceremony featured a flower arch, pew candles, and a reception in church parlors. Collections Still Being Received for Fly Spraying in La Porte City

La Porte City reports slow but steady fly control collections with generous support from the Navy Mothers Club and other groups. Miss Mary Nichols heads door to door collection to prevent duplicate contact. Donations remain welcome at the Ford garage or Evergreen Hatchery for July air spraying.

Spring Creek Farm Bureau Holds June Meeting

The Spring Creek township Farm Bureau met June 10 at the community building with 23 members. Reports on a victory fish fry at Hartman Reserve near Waterloo on June 4 highlighted the membership goal achievement. A social time and lunch followed, served by local hosts. July’s meeting will be in La Porte City as a four township gathering.

La Porte City HS to field summer baseball team

La Porte City High School will field a summer baseball team under the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Coach Randall Webb announced the plan this week. The first game is a night match at Waverly on Tuesday June 22 at eight o'clock. The full schedule is not yet completed and will be printed later.

Kocher Uthoff Wedding At Mt Vernon First Methodist

Richard Kocher and Ruth Uthoff were united in marriage at 3 pm Saturday at the First Methodist church in Mt Vernon. The ceremony featured a white marquisette gown, a daisied cascade bouquet, and a nuptial music program. A reception followed with a four tiered cake and white decor, then a short wedding trip before starting housekeeping in Iowa City. Relatives from La Porte City Brandon Vinton Cedar Rapids attended.

Red Birds Fall 3-2 at Clutier in Pitcher Battle

La Porte City Red Birds lost 3-2 at Clutier in a pitcher’s duel. Clutier took a two run margin in the second inning, and Red Birds were held to four hits, with Lesh and Eickmeyer starring on defense. Lesh allowed eight hits while striking out seven. Herbert Anton was elected director at a National Sales Barn meeting in North Platte and attended by others from the area.

Results of Poppy Sale Announced

Local residents contributed 170.07 to the poppy sale held over Memorial weekend. 1,500 poppies crafted by disabled veterans at Des Moines Veterans Hospital funded rehabilitation and aid for veterans children. Auxiliary workers and Mrs. Henry Niemeyer, record seller with 225 poppies, supported efforts on Main Street. David Harding returned home after Cedar Falls visit.
