Death summons Roy E. Baird in June at age 73

Roy E. Baird died Thursday night June 9 at a Waterloo hospital after a May 24 stroke. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 30 p m at Johannsen funeral home with Rev Oliver Jensen officiating. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery, Vinton. Surviving are son Marlon Baird of La Porte City, daughters Mrs Harold Johnson and Mrs George Brown of Waterloo, 13 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two brothers Fred Baird and HK Vance Baird, and one sister Mrs Louise Teeter. He was born July 31 1875 in Whiteside county and lived in Vinton and La Porte City as a carpenter.

La Porte City Dairy debuts Grade A milk and open house

L A Mether's La Porte City Dairy announces the first local Grade A and homogenized milk plant this week with open house on Chestnut Street Friday June 11 from 10 to 1130 a.m. Demonstrations show milk handling and equipment, with plans to process and bottle milk on site. The firm has expanded since 1947 adding pasteurizers, automatic bottle filler and capping, homogenizer, trucks, and new facilities. Health officer Dr. R T Paige endorses Grade A milk and homogenized milk as quality products for La Porte City.

Town Wins Over Country in Friday Quiz Show

In the Town and Country Quiz held last Friday in the high school auditorium the town defeated the country team 65 to 35. Winning team members were Martha Nabhol, Thelma Grampp, Harlan Rice, and Ray Trunell. opponents were Ardyce Miszner, Minerva Cooper, Darwin Cooper, and Edward Oberhauser. A WHO radio broadcast of the quiz will air July 15 at 8 30 p m. Also on the program were a Memory Course by Clay Rusk, a piano solo by Carmen Abbott, tap dance by Sandra Lamb, and a clarinet quintet by Joan Wilt, Beverly Sides, Mary Karr and Robert Matt. Mrs D M Seath of Lexington Ky visited with her sister Eva Bowles and will attend the Daily Science meeting in Minneapolis with her husband Dr Seath before returning home next week.

Mrs Martha Ferry died at her son Roy Ferry’s Waterloo home on June 9. Funeral services were Sunday at 2 30 PM at the Evangelical United Brethren Church with Rev M E Shank officiating and music by Mrs M E Shank and Miss Korene Stahnke singing The Old Rugged Cross and Going Down the Valley. Out of town relatives attended from Dakota City Watertog Oneida and Cherokee.

Grace Smith and Dean Wurtzel Wed in June Ceremony

Grace Smith of this city and Dean Wurtzel of Dysart were married on June 1 in an evening service at the Evangelical United Brethren Parsonage. Rev. E. F. Frankhauser officiated the ceremony in the presence of immediate relatives.

Bible School Closes With Picnic at E U B Church

Evangelical United Brethren church Bible school ends tomorrow after two weeks of daily classes from morning to 11 30 with 26 children enrolled across kindergarten primary and junior departments. Mrs Henry Kuhn and Mrs Harry Ferguson lead classrooms while Rev M E Shank directs juniors and Mrs Paul Davison and Mrs Andrew Kober coordinate music. A picnic for students instructors and families follows. Sunday’s Children's Day program combines with a recap and handwork display from the Bible school.

Larson Announces Complete Summer Recreation Card

Howard Larson announced La Porte City’s summer recreation program detailing morning gym work basketball and handicraft daily. Afternoon softball runs Monday Tuesday and Thursday at 1 pm while high school basketball practice is Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Swimming is Wednesday and Friday afternoons with a 12:30 pm bus departure from the schoolhouse. Monday night recreation dancing or roller skating runs 8 to 10:30 pm for all school children.

Commital Services Held for Jones Infant Last Week

Commital services for Donald Eugene Jones infant son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Jones Jr were at St West View cemetery with burial last Wednesday afternoon at 3 o clock The infant was stillborn at St Francis hospital Waterloo Wednesday morning June 8 at 7 20 He is survived by parents grandparents and great grandparents from Waterloo and La Porte City.

Mrs Keith Kline Appointed Secretary of Family Service League

Mrs Keith Kline of this city has been appointed executive secretary of the Family Service League. The change follows Miss Gretchen Estes resignation effective Aug 1, with Kline taking over that date. Estes pursues graduate social work training, and Kline previously held the post from 1941 to 1946 while recently working in Cedar Falls on a temporary basis.
