The U S Department of Labor published a booklet titled The Gift of Freedom distributed in Europe by ERP to show how wage earners fare under the U S system. It argues the retail store is the heart of American communities, especially small towns, and urges buying locally to support the town’s welfare.
The American Lutheran Church ends its daily vacation Bible school Friday after four weeks. Enrollment reached 40 children with classes for beginners to senior at a city park picnic. Teachers included Mrs. Melvin Beck, Mrs. Phil Kaiser, Mrs. Robert Huppert, and Rev. and Mrs. H E Hahn. Children’s Day program set for Sunday June 22 at 10 a.m. Public invited.
Mrs Martha Ferry 63 died this morning at 7 at her son Roy Ferry's home in Waterloo after a month bedfast with heart disease. Born Martha Angel in 1866 in Athens county Ohio she moved to Wisconsin then La Porte City before farming locally. She married Frank Ferry in 1887, moved to town 16 years ago, survived by two sons Roy and Ralph and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements pending at Johannsen funeral home.
Tuesday night vandals stole many hybrid tea roses and destroyed two prized rose bushes on the lawn of Mrs Edna Olive at Cedar and Third streets. Eleven of thirteen bushes had been planted last year and two this year. Flowers were patented award winners costing up to $2.50 per bush. Mrs Olive did not cut blossoms as they retreat to the first seat when pruned.
The daily vacation Bible school of the Methodist and Presbyterian churches closed Friday after two weeks of training. Over 90 enrolled across three departments with near perfect attendance. A program, certificates, and handwork displays followed, with a sack lunch at noon.
Tonight marks the first of a series of family eight picnics at the American Legion Country Club golf course. The events will continue every two weeks throughout the summer, continuing a tradition from recent years.
The La Porte City Co-Op Elevators will hold its third annual meeting on Wednesday evening, June 15, at 8 o'clock in the local high school auditorium. Elmer Kreger of Farmers Elevator Service Co of Ralston, Iowa, will be the principal speaker. The co-op reports new mill and mixer, now producing its own feeds, and grain sales to Des Moines based Farmers Grain Dealers Association. Three directors will be elected and refreshments served. the public is invited.
In its festival service last Sunday the Zion Lutheran church at Jubilee welcomed 15 new members including children Barbara Bauer, William Blocker, Edward Jesse, Roger Koch, Betty Ann Luloff, Lorraine Reinsche, Delbert Weltzm, and Franklin Weltzm. Adults added were Mr and Mrs Earl Kern, Mrs Edna Weltzm, Mr and Mrs Leslie Hunemiler, and Richard Lampe.
Rev H C Schluter former Evangelical United Brethren pastor died at his daughter Mrs Earl Norder home in Marshalltown Friday June 2 at 430 pm. Funeral held at Grave Evangelical United Brethren church Marshalltown Saturday 1 pm conducted by Rev J A Hacklen Calvary E U B Waterloo assisted by Rev Clayton Becker Garee E U B and Rev A Henning Ackley E U B. Burial in family lot at reserve. He aged 82 born in Wisconsin served 50 years in Evangelical conference. survived by daughter in Marshalltown three sons Ralph Walter Paul in Minneapolis and several grandchildren. Wife and one son Marvin preceded him in death.
Marion Lange of northeast of La Porte City wed Doris Walker of Brandon yesterday in the Little Brown Church near Nashua. Rev Hanscom officiated at 2 PM. Attendants were Shirley Moore and Duane Heisterkamp. Guests included families and the bridesmaid wore white sharkskin. blue suits for the groom and best man. A bell ringing ceremony followed as the couple left. A wedding dinner was served at 5 PM. The pair travel east for a week before a reception on return.
Genevieve Ann Pfeiffer daughter of Mr and Mrs George Pfeiffer of La Porte City is among the first graduates of Mercy hospital Dubuque nursing school Graduation day was Sunday June 5 This class marks the first post cadet class Nearly 1 000 000 housing units were turned out in 1948
Hackerson led the medal tournament at American Legion Country Club Sunday and won by one stroke with a 405 total. Pendlebury finished second with 106, while Kocher and Bennett tied for third at 112 three rounds. The club plans more events as the course remains open daily except during special activities.
Mrs Katie Harmon age 76 died Thursday June 2 at Vinson hospital after a long illness. Funeral services conducted by Rev G W Egeleston were held Saturday at the Johannsen funeral home La Porte City with burial in West View cemetery. She was born December 23 1872 in Easton Missouri and married Co R Harmon February 3 1899. Surviving are two daughters Faye McCune La Porte City and E R Guynn Mt Auburn, one grandson Roy Guynn, a brother Wallace Lasle, a sister Mrs Elmina Stout, a foster son preceded her in death.
Funeral rites for Vic Peterson were conducted Friday at 2 pm at Johannsen funeral home by Rev M E B Shank. Members of the Odd Fellow lodge served as casket attendants and at the graveside in West View cemetery. Out of town relatives attended, including Amos Bond, Mrs Lee Grimm and Patricia, Charles Haltorf, Wesley Borden and Leola, and many others from Vinton, Hopkinton, Waterloo, Eldora, Bran.
Betrothal of Miss Zne Ann Olsen of Oakland is announced by her parents on Saturday June 4. She is linked with Jack Jensen son of Mr and Mrs Karl Wendt of Oakland a University of California football fullback. Olsen is a noted diver with titles from Detroit to Daytona Beach and a member of the American Olympic team in 1948.
The Art Club closes its first season with a Sunday exhibit in the Methodist social room starting at three o clock. Oil paintings watercolors figurines sculpture and text work by members will be shown free to the public. Junior club works in clay and watercolor will also be displayed. Members named include Mr. and Mrs. Dione Enos Mr. and Mrs. Courtney Kice Mrs Clyde Graft Mrs Russell Arthur Mrs Henry Mahood Mrs Harold Stahnke Miss Mary Nichols Miss Mary Davis and Miss Juanita Bryan.
The first meeting of Circle 2 of the Methodist W S C S for the new year was held Tuesday afternoon at Mrs Charles Kocher’s home. Mrs Kocher was elected president for the year with Gene Kocher as vice president, Leslie Shaw secretary, and Edna Haberichter treasurer. Devotions were led by Gene Kocher and a quiz by Josephine Muller. Refreshments were served by the hostess and her daughter Jean.
La Porte City Red Birds beat Kesystine 7 2 for their fourth straight Corn Valley league victory. Melcher and Koepke combined for four hits and five innings of no hit relief as Koepke retired the final four batters after a single by the first man faced. La Porte City scored three first inning runs and added one unearned tally in the fifth aided by fielding errors, while Rathjen’s sixth inning single helped the visitors win. Next Sunday they travel to Clutter to face arch rivals in the Joep series.
