Mayor Johannsen said vandals have plugged park stools and plumbers were called twice this year to unclog sewers. If vandalism continues the city may lock restrooms this Summer. Parents urged to tell children not to throw refuse into stools.
U S 5 San Diego Post No 207 La Porte City to nominate officers for 1972 73 at Friday meeting at Post Home corner of Commercial and 3rd Streets Attendance drawing refreshments and light lunch follow. Commander Reinhardt thanks participants in Memorial Day Parade and urges all to fly the flag June 4 Flag Day. Flag kits available by calling 342 3264 and special orders may be placed.
Thirty three children attended the first Story Hour on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. Rev John Jacklin read stories and urged participation in dramatizing them. The program runs each Saturday through July 29 with new films and a projector planned for next meeting.
Tornado season is here and key guidance covers staying safe indoors or underground, avoiding windows, and taking shelter in reinforced areas. Advice includes moving at right angles if open country, lying in a ditch if no time to escape, and staying inside with walls away from windows in homes and schools. Night detection relies on sound and limited lightning glimpses, with TV as a detector option referenced.
A mixed 2 ball foresome was held Monday May 25 at La Porte City Country Club. Winners were Myrna Estep and Ron Schmitz with second low going to Glen Allfillisch and Judy Peters. Bob Case and Gladys Peters had third low. low Putts went to Kenny Ross and Nancy Jauch. average score prize to Pete Weatherly and Steve Estep. most practice in Puttin to Dorothy Altfillisch and Don Foster. Lunch followed.
Fire department log for LPC records emergency calls on May 29 and May 28. Chas Loveless handled fire calls. Dusty Foss was sent to hospital on May 28 and Helen Lowder to hospital on June 2.
The local Post Office announces bids for vehicle hire to deliver Parcel Post. Vehicle to be operated by postal employee, hired hourly, meeting load and mechanical specs, with contractor bearing all costs. One year contracts with renewal if satisfactory, typically one hour morning and one hour afternoon daily except Sundays and holidays. Contact the Post Office for details.
Jack Schafer announced that Peoples Natural Gas will offer a free Junior Cooking class for youths ages 9 through 11. The program runs at the gas office from June 7 to June 30, with registration urged early as spaces are limited to 12 students.
Mayor Sonia Johannsen announces plans to open the Black Hawk County Landfill after November. County residents and towns will haul refuse to the new site or a state approved location and pay disposal fees. The city aims to educate residents on recyclable materials via printed packets and demonstrations to reduce waste and dumping costs.
The Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO designates June as Union Voter Registration Month. President Hugh O. Clark urges affiliated unions to register members early to avoid the last minute rush before August primaries and November elections. The effort targets counties and cities with legal registration requirements, with city and county central bodies coordinating.
The Senior Class composites are now available and may be picked up at the High School.
Pleasant Valley Centerville Cedar Falls Sioux City and Fenton students won top awards in statewide environmental poster and photography contests sponsored by Iowa education and environmental groups. La Porte City high schooler Craig Bullis received an honorable mention in the high school age group and will attend the University of Northern Town this fall.
Don Bosco High School held its commencement on Sunday May 28 at 8 09 PM in the Don Bosco Gymnasium. Eighty students graduated and diplomas were conferred by Most Rev Francis J Dunn auxiliary bishop of Dubuque. The guest speaker was Mrs John Kameri¢k.
