City urged to fund mosquito spraying drive

A community appeal pressures residents to support a $1.50 contribution toward an imminent fogging program to control mosquitoes and polio risk. Delores Hansen Becomes Bride of William Lee

Delores Hansen daughter of Mr and Mrs A R Hansen wed William D Lee son of Mr and Mrs Roy Lee in a candlelight ceremony at the local Methodist church. Rev Oliver Jensen officiated before a flower decorated altar as music and a reception followed for about 150 guests with blue and yellow colors enhancing the celebration. The couple left for a motor trip after the reception.

Strange, St Clair Tie The Knot In Quiet Saturday Nuptials

Rev Oliver Jensen presided at a small afternoon ceremony uniting Miss Ina Strange and William M St Clair in the Mower garden of Roy Hawkins. Only close family attended as the couple planned active roles in Waterloo and Franklin Plumbing. They will reside at Elm and Fourth.

Hold Services for Kruckenberg Baby

Committal services for Sharon Kay Kruckenberg infant daughter of Mr and Mrs James Kruckenberg were held Wednesday at West View Cemetery with Mr Henry Warkentle of the Presbyterian church officiating. The baby died Tuesday afternoon after birth at Presbyterian hospital. Survived by parents, one sister Sharleen Lou, one brother Dennis James, maternal grandparents James and Mrs Christian, paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Lewis Kruckenberg, and maternal great grandmother Mrs Goodspeed of Hawkeye. They will reside on Chestnut Street. The bride worked in the family Snack Shop and attended Murray State Teacher's College. The groom is a Brown Transfer Co truck driver. Out of town guests attended from Charles City Nashua Dubuque and other areas.

Summer Session Starts Monday at Local School

La Porte City consolidated school to run a six week summer session from eight to noon starting Monday June 7. Superintendent Harold D. Matt says the program aids reading and arithmetic for students from first through eighth grade. Eva Boyles directs. No charge. students supply their own paper pencils and work books if needed.

Recreation Program For Summer Gets Underway Monday

La Porte City's summer recreation program for youths begins next Monday at 1:30 p.m. Randall Webb, longtime high school coach, leads activities with girls and boys swimming at the YMCA in Waterloo, plus archery and handicrafts. Ages 12 and up join swimming. junior high to high school join archery and crafts. Sessions meet at the school house, weather permitting, with a female chaperone for girls swimming.

Highland Club Meets for Picnic Plans at Roy Pauls Home

The Highland Club met Wednesday afternoon at Mrs. Harlan Hager’s home with two visitors, Mrs. Gen. Fell and Mrs. Clarence Hager. They planned a Sunday evening picnic to be held June 6 at Roy Pauls residence, and the next meeting is set with Mrs. Fritz Kilne on July 31.

Go Ahead on Plans for Aerial Spraying

La Porte City Lions Club directors voted to raise funds to spray the residential district for polio prevention. Volunteers will visit homes, collecting at least 1.50 per house for two sprayings on June 15 and August 15, to cover air plane hire and equipment. City council may share costs for spraying dump, creek and low spots. Receipts and donor lists will be published.

Lucy Elwell Retires From Teaching Returns Here

Lucy Elwell retires after 18 years as junior high English teacher in Sibley Iowa and returns home for rest. A farewell open house crowned her Queen for a Day and the community presented a Treasure Chest nearly 280 dollars. Elwell taught in rural schools, Preston Garner and Washington, Iowa, and earlier Reinbeck before moving to Sibley.

Services Held Sunday at Waterloo For Mrs. Ponsford

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Locke funeral home in Waterloo for Mrs. Mary L. Ponsford. She died Friday of a heart attack at 65. Rev. T Ketcham officiated and burial was in Mt Vernon township cemetery. She was born April 15, 1883 near Oswego, Alabama, daughter of George and Caroline Bopp. She married Walter E. Ponsford June 8, 1910, in Waterloo. Surviving are a sister and two brothers. she was preceded by her husband and her parents. A please for all F. H. A members is planned in the R. D. Sweet number Thursday, June 10, weather permitting. If rain, the pleate will be in the hot lunch room of the school. Come dressed for an ow in the woods, bring a covered dish, table service and sandwiches. Meet in the homemakers room.

Red Birds Cup Second Loop Win Over Geneseo

La Porte Citys Red Birds defeated Geneseo 11 to 3 Sunday in front of home fans for their second straight Corn Valley League win. Lesh homered, Marshall collected three hits, and Lesh Pearson Kahler and Moline contributed key hits as La Porte City built a big early lead and held on despite Geneseos late scoring. Lesh pitched seven strong innings with 3 hits and 1 walk, helping the Birds reach 36 hits in 90 at bats for a .400 team batting average.
