After a period of over four weeks of fighting a losing race with death our beloved wife and partner in The Progress Review has passed on. We are overwhelmed and grief stricken. We received much moral support from friends in the community which eased our burden. Her cheerful greet at the office will not be forgotten. Our regret is not keeping her with us longer but her soul is at peace with the Almighty.
Mr and Mrs Leslie Shaw celebrated their 25th anniversary at a dinner for about forty guests at their Mt Auburn home on Sunday February 22 The event featured a silver and candy decor large cake and a mock wedding game with family friends and neighbors attending Also noted were family moves including the George Seboldt family relocating near Garrison and the Annle Steffenson family moving their farm east of town
Funeral services are set for Friday afternoon at 2 PM at the Presbyterian church in La Porte City for Mrs. James P. Bennett who died Monday at St. Francis hospital in Waterloo after a cerebral hemorrhage. Ruby Laurene Page Bennett, born November 2, 1911 near Ida Grove, taught school in Tripoli and Storm Lake before marrying Bennett and moving to La Porte City to run The Progress Review. She leaves her husband two daughters and several relatives, with burial in Fremont Cemetery near Tripoli. Special music will be provided by local singers.
Mir and Mrs Arnold Brandt will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary Friday March 5 with an open house at the American Legion hall La Porte City from 2 to 4 30 and 7 to 9 p m A family supper will be served from 5 to 7 p m They were married in Knox County Nebraska and have farmed in the area 43 years He is 79 she 73 They have 11 living children and 39 grandchildren with 10 great grandchildren plus two deceased
Frank Garfield Bowers died of a heart attack at 5 45 a m on Tuesday February 24 1948 at his home in La Porte City he was 68 born October 5 1880 to Scott and Elizabeth Bowers He married Effie Atchinson September 1900 in the old Evangelical church He is survived by wife two sons Russell and Harold of Waterloo two brothers Ray of Waterloo and Orfie of Chicago two sisters Mina Thorpe of Waterloo and Hazel Peterson of La Porte City Funeral services were held at the Evangelical church Thursday at 3 pm with Rev M H Shank and Rev E R McClelland officiating Burial was in West View Cemetery with L O O F ritualistic services.
Mr and Mrs Henry Zobel visited Eldora and Hartley to see a brother in law of Mrs Zobel. Florence Smalley, Harold Bushnell and others traveled to Ft Knox Kentucky to visit Jim Smalley stationed there. Harry Westlake of Little Rock stayed with Charles Grace to see his mother Elizabeth Westlake who is ill. Cedar Homemakers Club changes host for February meeting on Feb 27. Escaping gas caused an explosion at Miss Helen Harchert’s Belmond home. her body was found in the basement.
County citizens vote March 8 1948 to elect a new county board of education with broad school oversight and district reorganization. The board will study schools and supervise reorganized districts after state superintendent approval. Areas 1 through 4 cover Black Hawk county with nominees listed for each area and at large seat voters in non high school areas choosing one member.
The Cedar Chips 4-H club met at Jean Frost’s home with 20 members present. New leader Mrs Wayne Foulk led the session. Talks covered grooming posture and color reports. Dentist month prompted a dental care briefing by Elaine Peterson. Lila Hood outlined 4-H goals and Mrs John Kerr demonstrated a Singer sewing machine. Lunch concluded the gathering.
Wartburg College in Waverly directs a capella choir led by Dr. Liewohl to perform at the Dysart school auditorium this Friday evening February 27 at 8:00. This marks the start of the spring tour for the Wartburg choir.
Harold D. Matt superintendente la porte city schools travels to Atlantic City New Jersey to join the annual meeting of the National Educational Association for administrators and supervisors this week.
The Methodist church choir presents a Hymn Festival on Sunday evening February 29 at 8 oclock in the church auditorium. The program includes choir numbers sales a quartet and a men's choir requested by the congregation. A free will offering will be taken.
Russell P. Miszner and Ardyce Franck wed in a double ceremony at the First Methodist Church in Water loo before 150 relatives and friends. The bride wore white satin with lace details and carried American Beauty roses. The groom’s party included Gerald Weaton as best man and Clare Shaner, Kenneth Eastman as ushers. A reception followed with pink, blue and white decor and a wedding trip to Omaha.
The Cub Scout Pack held a blue and gold banquet Monday at the local school dining hall attended by about 75 cubs, parents, and friends. Awards honored George Selk's graduation to the scout troop, new members joined, den chiefs introduced, and multiple rank badges and arrows presented. Den three organized with two new dens, and upcoming kite flying contest planned for April.
The Bruce Township Farm Bureau met at the Legion hall in La Porte City with 18 adults and 3 children attending. The program featured slides on soil erosion by Mr. Wall of the Soil Conservation Commission, followed by group singing and a light menu of cake sandwiches and coffee.
Vinton defeated La Porte City Rams 42 to 4 in a sectional contest at Vinton. Free throw disparity hurt the Rams as they made 13 of 30 while Vinton connected on 8 of 14. Hays led Vinton with 19 points, and Brust and Angel sparked La Porte City’s late rally.
Mrs John Kerr hosted Cedar Township women at her home on Wednesday February 18 with 15 in attendance. Home Economist Lila Hood led storage discussion and a planned menu was enjoyed. A Germany reading and a book exchange followed. A land quiz on teeth was conducted. Merle Anderson led the singing of Good Night Ladies as the meeting adjourned.
